Have you ever wondered how Head Avenue in Tallapoosa got its name?
Here is a little history....The corporate city of Tallapoosa was chartered in 1861. Some of its first settlers were Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Head. They moved to West Georgia from Lumpkin County where they ran a summer hotel resort. When they moved here they lived in the country among the Indians. Mr. Head opened a saw mill at a site which is now Kiker St.They had so many workers that they decided to open a boarding house, Head and Head Commissary on the corner of Head Avenue and what is now Atlanta St. Next for them was the Tallapoosa Hotel with 24 rooms.
At that time Tallapoosa had eleven barrooms. The boarders drank there but where not permitted to go to the hotel drunk! Five of the barrooms burned in one night and the others at a later date.
We hope you enjoy our tidbits of history.

In the 1890’s Haralson County Georgia and parts of East Alabama was a major part of grape and wine production in America, with up to 20,000 acres of grapes. A local land developer invited Hungarian wine making families to these areas. A Catholic church was built for them and this was the home of their priest. Train loads of fruit and wine were being shipped nationwide. This all came to a halt when prohibition hit.

Jana Gentry Donny Boswell reminded me tomorrow night to ask if anyone can answer this question.

In a 1900 US Census sheet for Haralson County, I find one or more individuals listed at Alms House. Can anyone help me understand what this place is (was)? Thanks Much!

The Haralson County Historical Society is in the planning stages of a time capsule celebration. This will be in conjunction with the Spring “Fair on the Square” scheduled for May 19, 2018. The Society is holding an essay contest titled “What Will Life be Like in 2092?”. Children in Primary grades can submit a piece of art depicting their ideas of the title. Elementary children should write a 100 word essay; Middle Schoolers should write a 300 word essay and High School students should write a 500 word essay. All entries MUST be submitted to the Historical Society (drop off at the Buchanan-Haralson Public Library) no later than May 1, 2018.
Selected essays will be placed in the time capsule! There will be one selection from each school. This is open to ALL students in Haralson County and Bremen.
The Society is also looking for volunteers, suggestions and/or donated items for the time capsule. Size is limited so please keep any potential donations to papers and/or photographs.
The Historic Haralson County Courthouse was built between 1891-1892 and has become a well-recognized part of Haralson County. The time capsule is scheduled to be opened in the year 2092 (Courthouse’s bi-centennial!).
Anyone with questions or looking for additional information can call Karen Higgins (678-644-0743) or Donny Boswell (770-527-4157).
