Phyllis Purves-Smith has just delivered new paintings to the gallery! Phyllis’ work often reflects the subtle and atmospheric beauty of the Maine Coast. From mist-shrouded inlets and foggy coves to bold sunrises and sunsets, her paintings are detailed meditations on her surroundings. New paintings from Ray Crane and Marieluise Hutchinson have arrived at the gallery! Both Crane and Hutchinson have an eye for detail and tend to paint at modest sizes but their finesse with a brush and the quality of light they render makes their works feel much larger. Crane is known for his marine paintings that feature the wonderful windjammers that sail out of the many harbors along the coast of Maine. He often will depict them along with iconic lighthouses that dot the coast. Marieluise has a distinctive style and is well loved for her paintings of rural New England, especially in winter.

Tom Hughes has delivered several amazing paintings to the gallery for this season. His signature blend of painterly realism and Maine coast subjects has made his work a favorite of Bayview Gallery collectors for more than a decade now. Tom cut his teeth as an illustrator for the Christian Science Monitor before turning to painting full time. He is a multi-award winning painter including the Plein Air Salon Art Competition Grand Prize from Plein Air Magazine in 2019. The featured painting is titled “Morning Mist” and depicts a cluster of water-craft at a dock as sunlight warms a gentle summer haze in the background. Tom devotes the foreground to a subtle study of reflected light on water capturing both the atmospheric sky above and the green translucence below. “Morning Mist” is oil on panel and measures 16”x20”.

Joanne Tarlin paints in metaphors that reflect the complexity of our current experience. She writes “Like the social world in which we live, nature represents our strengths, oddities and failures in full display”. Tarlin emphasizes these sentiments by employing vigorous mark-making with her brush and palette knife into a luscious surface of thick oil paint. Darkness and light come forward and recede on her canvases like the ebb and flow of the sea upon rocks or shadows flickering through dense thickets. Her paintings are intriguing and contemplative journeys that mirror her own life journey.

The featured painting is oil on linen at 24” x 18” and titled “Many a Flower Wafts Aloft”.

What would summer in Maine be without some time spent on a lake? Belgrade, Kezar, Sebago, and the mighty Moosehead have been host to generations of locals and visitors alike. Unlike the ocean with its dramatic tides and pounding surf, a day lakeside conjures up perhaps a bit more relaxation and leisurely exploration of the shoreline or a quiet paddle through dappled light from overhanging leaves.

In Wendy Newcomb’s painting titled “Once a Tree”, she captures an idyllic inlet looking out on a sweeping Maine vista. A worn and weathered tree trunk stretches into the foreground inviting explorers of all ages to paddle up and have a look or climb out to the end and jump off into the cool water. Wendy’s painting is oil on panel, 12” x 24”.

Bayview Gallery takes its name from Bay View Street in Camden and we spent many wonderful years there while maintaining our current location in Brunswick. Camden harbor is home to a number of wooden sailboats of varying size and when they are at dock they are irresistible to artists! The curves, the lines, the shining varnish and brass offer endless opportunities to get inspired. For their lucky passengers they represent a unique way to experience the coat of Maine from the water. The featured painting is titled “The Mary Day, Camden” by George Van Hook. It is an oil on canvas, 14” x 11”. George’s painting captures the boat from its stern is his energetic Impressionist style. We hope everyone had a lovely Independence Day! Continuing with our efforts to share new works that have come to the gallery recently, today we have Marieluise Hutchinson’s “A Slant of Summer Light”, oil on panel,
9”x12”. Hutchinson balances fine details with a nostalgic style to create timeless images that will last a lifetime.

Another new piece appropriate for this hot holiday weekend! “Hot August Day” by Marsha Donahue is an oil on panel at 6”x12” and captures one of those perfect summer days on the coast of Maine. We don’t have a lot of sandy beaches on the coast but those we do have hold a special place in our memories of summer. What’s your favorite Maine beach?

It was a cool and wet spring and now summer is upon us! Lots of new work is coming in to the gallery so stay tuned and we will share as much as we can. All new work is on our website too - link in bio.

The featured painting is by Hodges Soileau titled “Tucked In”. It features one of the many out-of-the-way inlets throughout Maine where you can launch your kayak and go on an impromptu adventure! Hodges is a Signature member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Society of Marine Painters and the Portrait society of America. Following g a career in illustration, Soileau now spends his time traveling and painting.

Just arrived at the gallery is this lush oil of Cundy’s Harbor at dawn by Kevin Mizner titled “Daybreak”. Before turning to painting full-time, Kevin was a sternman on a lobster boat - the person who baits, sets and hauls the traps as the captain guides the boat to the buoys floating on the surface that mark where the traps are resting on the ocean floor. Kevin brings his memories of that experience to the small but important details of his paintings of working waterfronts that give them an authenticity that others might miss. From weather-worn hulls to how gear is stacked on the docks, Mizner’s landscapes give you a real sense of place.
