🏛️ Did you know that before there was an "official" Downriver, there was Brownstown Township? And what's up with the three-part split with Brownstown patched all over the area? 🤔 Keep reading because we have answers to these burning questions!

🎉 We have an entire blog that explains more, and be sure to click the link below for all the details, but one of the biggest highlights is that Brownstown Township will celebrate its 200th birthday in 2027 with bicentennial events planned throughout all three sections of the township. 🥳 For all the artists out there, they are also having a contest to redesign the logo for the Brownstown Historical Society.

I have used this photo several times before, but, it is very appropriate today; Memorial Day.

Everybody in this photo was a veteran of the Civil War and was a member of Carleton's Perry Baker Post #200 of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).

The G.A.R. was a national fraternal organization of Union veterans.

They are standing outside, along the west wall, of the former Methodist Episcopal church in Carleton; located at the northeast corner of Monroe and Matthews Streets.

The M.E. Church was built in 1883.

This group has probably just returned from the Carleton Cemetery after honoring their fallen friends and comrades.

From left to right:

2. Joe Bale
3. Mr. Smith
4. John Parish
5. John Discher
6. Sam Brown
7. Frederick Ballen *

10. S. Manor
11. Mark Baker
12. Levi Clark
13. George Maxwell
14. Amos Burroughs
15. Not Identified
16. George Wenzel
17. James Van Houten
18. Robert Woodward
19. Andrew Wright
20. Lewis Turner

* - Frederick Ballen was a Medal of Honor recipient and is buried in the Carleton Cemetery.

The photo was taken on
May 30, 1912 by George E. Lang.

These Civil War veterans stand as a lasting tribute to their comrades that had fallen before them.

Unidentified girl poses in front of the 48 star flag. This flag was used in the United States from 1912-1959. Based off of the fashion and hairstyle, we think this could be from the 1940s. Patriotic backdrops were also somewhat popular around WW2.
