Today's item from the archives: part of the first haircut photo collection! Al Criscillo, a barber in Williamsburgh for over 5 decades, offered parents a free photo of their child's first haircut. His photos, preserved in the City Reliquary's collection, show a changing community in an unchanging institution.

Did you know that the City Reliquary played a crucial role in a Guinness World Record? In 2005, volunteers at a City Reliquary event, documented by the NY Times, counted the restaurant menus in Harley Spiller's vast collection, certifying the total of over 5,000 for Guinness! Harley's love of oddball collections has led to many collaborations with the City Reliquary over the years - you can read more about them in this week's message: https://mailchi.mp/cityreliquary/cn0520_gen-9452208?e=e465c7a1a0

Cookie Tongue is a theatrical freak folk musical menagerie with puppetry, animation, butoh-inspired dance, and ritual magic, featuring original songs and whimsical interludes inspired by Cookie Tongue's surreal mythology, fairy tales, childhood, ghost stories, and a sprinkle.of the occult. Performed with guitar, singing saw, glockenspiel, organ, bells, drums, experimental percussion, and orphaned toys to send you tumbling down the Cookie hole, through sugar ash and rolling sleeves of starlight, "spellbound, tasting of a world just beyond."

What's the connection between Rodin and the City Reliquary? It runs through our Resident Geologist Emeritus Nik Sokol. Nik's great-grandfather, Josef Kratina, was Rodin's lead apprentice prior to emigrating to NYC in 1907. Kratina's sculpture studio was at 81 Prospect Place in Brooklyn, and there he worked on the bust of Teddy Roosevelt that is usually on view in the City Reliquary's back gallery (along with a photo of Kratina in all his mustachioed glory). Nik talks more about his family and love for the City Reliquary in this week's message, which you can read in full here:

The City Reliquary withfriends

Dear friends & neighbors: we have sobering news and request your help. After fourteen years on Metropolitan Avenue, the City Reliquary storefront museum is in danger of closing. Numerous factors have brought us to this point, not least of all the economic impact of the COVID pandemic, and the changing cultural and economic tenor of the city. We are dependent on admissions and public events for revenue, and, after 6 months of closure, this model is no longer sustainable.

In order to reopen our storefront to the public, we will need to transition to a new, sustainable funding model based on monthly membership donations. Our minimum threshold to stay open is just $3,000 of sustainable funding per month. If we can meet this modest monthly goal by 11/22/20, we will be able to secure the storefront and reopen our doors to the public – with utmost care for public health and safety. If we are unable to raise these funds, the doors to the storefront museum will remain closed and this chapter of City Reliquary history will come to an end.

You can find more information about our monthly membership program, along with newly added benefits, on our new sustainable membership site at this link: withfriends.co/cityreliquary. We are also pleased to announce that in October we will open the Williamsburg storefront to members only, with new health precautions in place, and we invite you to visit us if you are able to do so safely.

We remain a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, therefore all donations are 100% tax-deductible. Your sustainable support is crucial for the survival of the Reliquary.

We hope that you and your loved ones are well, and we send our deepest thanks for your support.

On the nineteenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we remember the 2,977 lives taken that day, the emergency workers who made the supreme sacrifice to help others, and the lives lost since as a result of the physical and emotional tolls inflicted that day. To this remembrance we add the innumerable Black lives taken by systemic racism and the nearly 25,000 lives in our city (many BIPOC) affected by the current COVID pandemic. Today we remember all the lost, and continue to work towards being a more just society.
