Joel Meyerowitz, framed by DDG. Currently on view in “Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The exhibition brings together photographs made across the United States in the years surrounding the 1976 Bicentennial, many originating in a series of federally funded photographic surveys intended to create a visual record of the country at a particular moment in its history. Seen fifty years later, the photographs form a complex portrait of American life, landscape, architecture, and change. Smithsonian American Art Museum
Meyerowitz’s photographs from this period turn their attention to the vernacular American landscape: roadside architecture, signage, color, and the incidental details of everyday life. Here, layers of hand painted signs, storefront architecture, and the distant St. Louis skyline collapse into a distinctly American streetscape.
Framed by DDG in a simple black wood frame with an archival 8 ply mat.
“Much Here Is Beautiful” is on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. through April 18, 2027.
