Heartfelt thanks to Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus for advocating on behalf of the Coney Island Museum for AD46 Grant funding!
The funding will be used to upgrade systems vital to maintaining museum-standard environmental conditions in the galleries and archives. These include the installation of a glass door at the Museum's entrance to effectively control ambient temperature and humidity.
The Coney Island Museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the unique history of the amusement district and its surrounding neighborhood. The Museum's archives are available as a critical resource to researching scholars, and its public displays support educators from local schools.
We're very grateful for the continued support from our local elected officials, community leaders, and our family and friends. You can become a supporter here: https://coneyisland.networkforgood.com/projects/57190-the-coney-island-museum

#artiseverywheremw From folk art to fine art! These 2 paintings, gouache on paper, are the work of Edward J. Austen, a well-known British painter of panoramas and cycloramas in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Cited for his exceptional grasp of perspective, these illustrations depicted historic tableaus on a massive scale, prior to the invention and subsequent popularity of motion pictures. The addition of electrical and
mechanical effects led to the development of the “scenograph”. Early scenographic attractions created by Austen included “The Johnstown Flood”, “The Galveston Flood”, and “The Battle Abbey”, and were featured at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893); the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo (1901); and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis (1904). Several of Austen’s scenographs were also installed in Coney Island, including “The Galveston Flood”(1902); “New York To The North Pole”(1906); “The Johnstown Flood”(1906); and “The Great Italian Earthquake”(1908). #museumweek2021 #coneyislandmuseum #coneyislandusa #coneyisland #cyclorama #panorama #fineart #theatre #immersiveexperience #paintings #historicalreenactment #historyalive

#eurekamw Talk about a “Eureka” moment! Charles Feltman, a German immigrant, is credited with inventing the frankfurter when he began selling his native-style sausages, served on elongated buns, from a pushcart for 10 cents. For better or worse, fast food was born!

Nicknamed “Coney Island red hots” or “hot dogs” their popularity enabled Feltman to establish a vast emporium between Surf Avenue and the boardwalk. Covering 8 acres, it included several restaurants, a hotel with a grand ballroom, a beer garden, an outdoor movie theater, a carousel, the “Ziz” roller coaster, and other amusements. Feltman’s boasted that it employed more than 1,000 workers, and had the capacity to serve 8,000 meals a day. Feltman’s operated until 1954; it’s success was surpassed by that of a former employee—Nathan Handwerker. His “Nathan’s Famous”hot dogs have become synonymous with Coney Island. Hi, can anyone tell me the name of the wooden roller coaster that stood to the right of Steeplechase Park next to the Parachute jump that circled around the Steeplechase smokstack. Remember, this is going back before 1964 which was the last season that Steeplechase Park was operating.

Friends of the Coney Island Museum! The Museum could use donations of certain (new or used) electronics, especially Mac laptops or Ipads, to assist with presentations in "Ask the Experts" and the Congress of Curious Peoples, etc. Such donations are tax-deductible for the amount of their fair market value. Please let us know if you're able to help in this area. Thanks!
