The Jewish holiday of Purim will be celebrated this Tuesday! Here's a Purim Fun Fact:
Costumes are a fun favorite Purim custom for many children and adults. One of the reasons for this custom is that in the story of the Purim miracle, Hashem was hidden. The miracle seemed to happen in a natural way (unlike by other holidays where the miracles were clearly miraculous and from Hashem). We allude to the hiddenness of Hashem's hand by wearing costumes and "hiding" ourselves.
~ What are you dressing up as for Purim this year?~

Day Two of Winter Camp was not only a blast but SUPER educational!! We headed straight to the @jewishchildrensmuseum where we got to learn all about Torah and Mitzvot with a very fun and interactive game show. We saw firsthand how Hashem created the world and got to play with life sized Challah. After that we all went to the Mini Grocery store and learnt all about keeping kosher and how to shop and checkout our grocery cart. The Mueseum tour ended off with a Kosher Chocolate Factory show where we made our very own homemade chocolate lollipops. The last stop before going home we got to get ice cream from a kosher ice cream shop in the neighborhood. What a fun packed day!! #friendshipcircle #friendshipisnotaluxery #wintercamp @ Jewish Children's Museum

This week we celebrated Tu BiShvat - the birthday of the trees! This day marks the season when the earliest blooming trees in the Land of Israel wake up from their winter sleep and start a new cycle of bearing fruit. Tu BiShvat is celebrated by eating fruit, specifically the 7 kinds that are mentioned in the Torah in the praise of the Land of Israel.
There's a verse in the Torah that states: "A man is a tree of the field". Just as trees are constantly growing and producing fruit, people should always strive for growth in their lives, and should strive to produce more and more fruit - acts of goodness and kindness.
~What "fruit", what mitzvah, will you add in today?

The Jewish people continue their journey out of Egypt in this week's Torah portion. They are a few days journey away from Egypt when Pharaoh decides to change his mind and, together with his army, chases the Jewish people to re-claim them as his slaves. The Egyptian army caught up to the Jewish people, trapping them at the sea. G-d made a miracle for the Jewish people and split the sea, allowing them to pass through on dry land.
We all face challenges in our lives. There are always moments when we feel "trapped" in our challenges. But we should know, that just like G-d came to the rescue of the Jewish people when they left Egypt, He will rescue us again. We have to do everything we can, and once we've done our part G-d will take care of the rest.

Did someone say chocolate?

These lucky 2nd graders had a great time learning how to make chocolate and making their own chocolates to take home! (Or eat right away - depending on how long they could hold out for ๐Ÿ˜†)
As they were going through the chocolate making process, they also discussed the different blessings for different foods and the concept of being thankful for everything they have. Check out the smiles to see how much fun they had! ๐Ÿ˜ @ Jewish Children's Museum

In this week's Torah portion Pharaoh enslaves the Jewish people and, after being told by his astrologers that a redeemer would be born, commands that all male babies be thrown into the Nile.
The leader of the Jewish community at the time was Amram. His daughter Miriam prophesied that he and his wife Yocheved would have a son who would take the Jewish people out of Egypt. When a son was born they placed him in a basket in the Nile, hoping that the astrologers were report that the redeemer had been thrown into the water.
Basya, Pharaoh's daughter, discovered the basket and took the baby - who she named Moshe - to raise him in the palace.

This week we commemorated the 10th of the Hebrew month Tevet. On this day in the year 3336 (425 BCE), the armies of the Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem, which eventually led to the destruction of the temple, the Beit Hamikdash. The 10th of Tevet is observed as a day of fasting and repentance.
The Rabbis teach that we can help re-build the Beit Hamikdash in a spiritual way. When we do an act of goodness or kindness; when we fulfill one of G-d's commandments, we are adding a brick to the spiritual Beit Hamikdash. The building of the spiritual Beit Hamikdash hastens the coming of Moshiach, when we will merit to see the third Beit Hamikdash being built in Jerusalem!
~ What can you do to add a brick to the Beit Hamikdash? ~

01/07/2020

A favorite Chanukah activity at the JCM is donut decorating. It's something the kids love - love to decorate and love to eat. It's the only activity that we've repeated for a couple of years now, and every time we think that maybe it's time for something new we just think of all of the families who come in and immediately ask, "Where's the donut decorating?" And we put it into the program. Again.
But while we've repeated donut decorating a few times now, we're always looking on how to improve it. We started off with the donut decorating being a huge mess, literally, and slowly evolved into a more and more organized activity every year.
These carousels were this year's innovation. Originally created for nespresso cups, we used them for small containers filled with icing and sprinkles. They looked so good AND it kept the room clean and organized!

The holiday of Chanukah is also called "the festival of lights". On Chanukah the Menorah is lit to commemorate the miracle of a small flask of oil staying lit for 8 days. The Menorah and its lights are symbols of freedom and the victory of light over darkness.
Sometimes we might experience darkness. Sometimes it might be hard for us to do the right thing or express the G-dly soul that's within us. How do we get rid of the darkness? Not by fighting it away, but by adding light.
The Chanukah lights remind us that we can illuminate ourselves, our families, and our homes with the light of the Torah and good deeds. And from there, the light will spread out to illuminate the others around us, making the whole world a brighter place.

#Chanukah Fun Fact: After the #Macabees reclaimed and cleaned the #Temple in #Jerusalem, which was defiled by the Assyrian Greeks, they seached for #pure #oliveoil with which to light the #menorah. They found lots of jugs of oil, but the oil was ritually impure. Technically, they were allowed to use it. But the #Macabees didn't want to go with the bare minimum. They kept on searching for ritually pure oil. And when G-d saw their devotion to the #mitzvah, He perfomed a #miracle for them. They found a small jug of ritually pure oil! This miracle oil burned in the #menorah for 8 days, until new, pure oil could be procured.
