Happy Birthday to our very own Thomas P. Mancino, Brigadier General, USA (Ret.), Past Commander of Oklahoma’s 45th Infantry Brigade, and recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal!

The Military History Center is especially grateful for Tom’s distinguished military career, steadfast leadership, and continued dedication to preserving and sharing our nation’s military history. As president, Tom provides invaluable guidance and support to our organization, helping advance our mission, strengthen our programs, and ensure that the sacrifices and service of Oklahoma’s veterans are remembered and honored. His commitment, experience, and passion for military history continue to make a meaningful difference at the Military History Center.

We are also pleased to celebrate our librarian, Susan Virdell, and deeply thankful for her dedicated volunteer service. Susan plays an important role in caring for our collections, helping visitors, supporting research, and ensuring that the stories of those who served are preserved and shared with future generations. Her generosity, knowledge, and commitment make a lasting difference in our organization.

On POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor the service members who were taken as Prisoners of War and those still Missing in Action.

The Military History Center was honored to attend the presentation of two distinguished awards to Dr. Clarence Oliver: the Oklahoma Freedom Medal and the Oklahoma Thunderbird Medal.

The Oklahoma Freedom Medal is the highest award the Adjutant General can bestow upon a civilian, making this a particularly meaningful recognition of Dr. Oliver’s contributions and service.

Thank you to the city councilors who joined us for this special event and for the opportunity to visit the new Citizen Soldier Museum. We are proud to celebrate the individuals and stories that preserve Oklahoma’s military history.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders, service members, and countless Americans who answered the call in the days and years that followed.

We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the lasting impact of that day.

The Military History Center is proud to feature a new display honoring United States Navy Petty Officer Walter R. Gibbs, a Pawnee, Oklahoma native whose 23 years of service included 20 years on active duty and three years in the Naval Reserve.

Gibbs began his Navy career with the Seabees in 1985, serving at commands across the United States and overseas, including Naples, Italy, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Throughout his career, he earned numerous awards and decorations recognizing his service, dedication and accomplishments.
