We are always working to make improvements to Blithewold’s ecosystem, so harmful chemical sprays are an absolute last resort. This year, we’re thrilled to share that we’ve done no chemical mosquito spraying at all! 🙌

The problem with mosquito sprays is that they target adult mosquitoes – they don’t prevent mosquitos from re-entering the area, and they don’t control mosquitoes at the source (when they are larvae, before they fly and bite you). Even worse, most mosquito sprays are a broad spectrum insecticide, meaning they kill a large variety of insects (including pollinators and other beneficial insects). It’s also important to note that mosquito sprays are also detrimental to humans and non-insect wildlife that inhale them. ☠

Our solution this year is Mosquito Buckets! 🦟🪣🚫

Inspired by Homegrown National Park (founded by Doug Tallamy), the Mosquito Buckets you see spotted throughout the grounds are simple yet powerful containers that are significantly reducing mosquito presence. 🎉

The buckets work because they create an attractive place for mosquitos to lay their eggs. A piece of a mosquito dunk or mosquito bits (containing a naturally occurring bacterium Bti - "Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis") are added to the water. This prevents those larvae from developing into adults, interrupting the life cycle. 🤓

Another reason we love them - they’re significantly cheaper than toxic sprays!!

We encourage you to set up your own buckets at home! Find free “How-to” guides at the Welcome Center. 📃

Sometimes there's a plant that just gets more attention than its neighbors. Lately, it's been this native beauty.

Have you seen one before?

The Blithewold wedding that transcends all others: Marjorie Van Wickle and George Armstrong Lyon, June 1, 1914.

The 4pm ceremony was held in the Enclosed Garden, witnessed by 300 family members and friends of the bride and groom. Marjorie’s friend and trained opera singer, Irma Nayral, sang the Angelicus from a hidden location deep within the Bosquet, followed by a chorus of choirboys who processed from the North Porch, through the Bosquet, to the Summerhouse. Then, an organ began the wedding march from Wagner’s Lohengrin, and William McKee walked Marjorie down the aisle.

Marjorie wore a Grecian-inspired gown of ivory silk satin and silk chiffon. The bodice included pieces of Honiton bobbin lace that had belonged to Marjorie’s great grandmother. The drape was caught up with clusters of cream wax flowers, and her lace veil was secured in her hair with flowers.

These photos were taken by Elizabeth Cary Studio (Bristol, RI) and the famous Fabian Bachrach Studio (Boston, MA).
