Founded in 1932, the Observatory operates the famous weather station on the summit of Mount Washington, taking hourly weather observations and maintaining one of North America's longest continuous climate records. Given its unique location in one of Earth's most extreme environments, the Observatory utilizes its natural laboratory as a benchmark research station, collaborating with universities, government agencies, and private companies on many types of severe weather research and testing. The Observatory has also emerged as a world resource for weather and climate education, operating classroom and distance learning programs, educational trips to its mountaintop weather station, and the Mount Washington Museum on the summit of Mount Washington, NH.

Summit staff enjoyed a beautiful sunrise this morning, complemented by rime ice on the observation deck railing and a thin layer of snow on the summit cone.

The first measurable snowfall of the season was recorded yesterday (October 5th), with 0.7" of snow measured over the last 24 hours. The snow was accompanied by thick rime ice, subzero wind chills, and a peak wind gust of 110 mph!

Moonlight lit up the foreground as the Northern Lights briefly lit up the northern skies last night. From Monday into Tuesday, the immediate foreground pictured will turn white as snow and rime ice return (along with high winds). Lenticular clouds formed east of Wildcat on Thursday ahead of a cold front that passed today. Behind the front, much cooler weather will move in this weekend, followed by the potential for subzero wind chills, measurable snow, and icy trail conditions early next week. Close to sunset today (30 Sept 2026), some soft, diffused rays of sunshine stretched over to Middle Carter, highlighting some veins of fall foliage running up the slopes above an undercast layer that settled into Pinkham Notch.

Before rain and fog descended upon the summit last night, lenticular clouds formed on the leeward side of the Northern Presidentials, pictured here looking northwest.
