Blue Ridge Highlander

Blue Ridge Highlander https://TheBlueRidgeHighlander.com is a labor of love, we enjoy sharing the beauty of the Blue Ridge Wayne and Sherry Bell Dukes.

TheBlueRidgeHighlander.com is a travel publication created by C. We have been in business since 1977. We started the Highlander in 1996. We are the writers, photographers and full technical staff of the magazine. We set out from the beginning, to create a unique and comprehensive guide to the mountains, to help all those interested in finding things to do, and places to go.

Meet Vanna, Chimney Rock’s new opossum animal ambassador! 🐾

Did you know that opossums can eat venomous snakes, are unlikely to carry rabies virus, and can eat thousands of ticks in one summer?

You may have already seen Vanna as she has roamed in her outdoor enclosure, and we’re looking forward to teaching with her this fall. Our staff works with her daily, and she is already a fabulous addition to our education team. Vanna is quite curious, and loves solving enrichment puzzles! Being nocturnal, she sleeps during the day and is most active at night.

Stop by the Discovery Den next time you’re in the Park and discover more about Vanna and her wild opossum counterparts!

Join us August 29-30th for “Watercolor in Drybrush: Wildlife and Nature’s Elements” with instructor Alan R. Young. As an alternative to traditional watercolor, students will learn to use watercolors with less water and less absorbent paper. Learning to paint in layers and painting by subtraction is essential to this technique. Basic light principles, scale, some basic drawing fundamentals, and use of additional tools for the drybrush media will also be discussed.
