On June 15th the historic house and galleries will reopen to visitors for self-guided tours and viewing of the art exhibit. All guests must wear masks while inside the house and no more than ten people will be permitted in the house at a time.

News of Long Branch: The Sheila Macqueen Gardens are budding with spring splendor and Master Gardener, Lorie McKay, has been busy at work overseeing spring clean-up and mulching of all our gardens. Lorie began caring for the gardens at Long Branch in the spring of 2018 and says it has taken two years to get the gardens into good shape and that she is very pleased with how the gardens look this year.

Lorie has long ties to Long Branch through Martha Cook who she claims got her started in a gardening career. "It's because of Martha that I am here!", says an enthusiastic Lorie. As many know, Martha Cook was a long time Clarke County resident whose friendship with famed British florist, Sheila Macqueen, served as the inspiration for the creation of our gardens. It was Martha's passion and hard work that made it possible for these beautiful gardens to be established and dedicated to Ms. Macqueen.

The first photo is of Lorie checking out the Sheila Macqueen gardens and the second is Sheila Macqueen and Martha Cook at an event at Long Branch back in the day.

~ IMPORTANT NOTICE ~

Dear Friends of Long Branch,

It is with great reluctance that we make the difficult decision to close the grounds of Long Branch to the public effective April 3rd and until further notice. As an organization that seeks to serve the best interest of our community, we feel obligated to do our part to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we stand together with the leadership of Clarke County and join the other public facilities in our community to uphold the Virginia stay at home order.

Please stay well at home until this situation passes and know that we will truly miss seeing you! We thank you for your continued support and wish you each well as we navigate these troubling times together.

Be Well!

03/31/2020

Dear Friends,

The health and safety of our community members is important to all of us here at Long Branch. We understand that this is a stressful time for you and your families as we all do our best to keep going during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Like you, we are closely monitoring this fast-evolving situation and have cancelled or postponed all of our programs, events and tours through June 10, including the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Horse Fair. We will continue to make decisions about future event postponements based upon CDC guidelines and restrictions mandated by the Governor of Virginia.

Our grounds continue to be open to the public and you are welcome to enjoy our open space to the degree that social distancing allows. We are grateful to be able to provide a respite to our neighbors and are happy to see families out walking, riding bikes and fishing on our grounds, especially during these challenging times.

Although we are disappointed to know that we will miss seeing you until this situation passes, we are comforted knowing that we are all in this together. We are proud to be a member of this community and of the continued privilege to welcome our friends and neighbors to this 200+ year old home. We thank you for your continued support and wish you each well as we navigate these troubling times together as a community.

Stay well and we hope to be able to see you soon!

~ IMPORTANT NOTICE ~

Dear Friends of Long Branch,

At Long Branch, our highest priority is the health and well-being of our community and their families. As such, due to the rapidly evolving concerns about the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and in keeping with the recommended protocols made by the Center for Disease Control, we will suspend all scheduled events through March 31. Our intention is to reschedule the Speaker Series talks with Laura Dabinett and William Woodward as well as the Woodward opening reception and we will keep you informed of any new information regarding these events.

We will continue to closely monitor this situation and make decisions based on what is best for our community. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office at 540-837-1856 or email us at [email protected] .

Stay Well,
The Board of Directors and Staff

#TBT Blue Ridge Hunt riders, horses, and hounds have galloped across Clarke County since 1888, when the hunt was established. This 1968 opening meet photo is of William Clagett of Springfield Farm in Berryville and his daughter Susan, whom many know today as Susi Bailey.

You are invited to Blue Ridge Hunt’s Thanksgiving meet on Thursday, Nov. 28, at Long Branch Historic House & Farm (830 Long Branch Lane, Boyce). Riders, horses, and hounds begin to gather at 10:30 a.m.; the hunt moves off at 11:30 a.m. Please leave all pets at home so they do not distract the working hounds.
