New on display at the National Corvette Museum: the actual 2011 Corvette Grand Sport that led NASCAR’s starting field at the Brickyard 400. 🏁

On July 31, 2011, U.S. soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo drove this car during the pre-race pace laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It marked the 18th consecutive year Chevrolet supplied the event’s pace car.

The Grand Sport name traces back to five purpose-built race cars developed under Zora Arkus-Duntov in 1963. By Corvette’s sixth generation, that heritage could be seen in wider fenders and tires, upgraded brakes, and suspension tuned for greater cornering capability. Those features gave the Grand Sport performance advantages to match its distinctive appearance.

This car’s Supersonic Blue paint, white stripe, and red fender hash marks were paired with Brickyard graphics and a roof-mounted light bar for its race-day role. See those details up close and explore another chapter of Grand Sport history during your next visit: www.corvettemuseum.org/visit/

There’s a reason they called it the Snake Skinner. In the late 1980s, Corvette engineers were exploring how a lighter ZR-1 could deliver even more performance as the Dodge Viper emerged as a new American performance competitor. The 1989 Corvette Snake Skinner II was part of that development story and represents a fascinating period of experimentation during the C4 era. Kentucky residents receive $15 adult and $5 youth admission through October 18 at the National Corvette Museum. Plus, join us this Thursday, October 8, for Fall STEAM Day with hands-on robotics, design, engineering, and innovation activities. For the first time, you’ll be able to go behind the scenes and see more of our collection than ever before 🤩

Public tours of our new Collections Facility begin January 13, 2027, giving guests a closer look at Corvettes from every generation, significant vehicles rarely on public display, and the preservation and restoration work that protects the history of America’s Sports Car.
