I'm so sorry to announce that Akimbo Gallery will be closing. This Saturday June 29, will be our last day of business. Susan and I both want to thank all of you who have visited and supported our gallery, attended the openings and encouraged us over the past year and a half. We have enjoyed meeting many new artists and art lovers in the area. Please consider taking advantage of or last days in business and stop by to say hello. We will be open from noon to 5;00 this Wednesday through Saturday.

An exhibit of new acrylic paintings by Susan Woodard will be featured at Akimbo Gallery, 175 N. Main Street, Bowling Green. An opening reception for the exhibit, entitled “Texture”, will take place at the gallery Friday, June 7th from 5 to 8pm in conjunction with the First Friday Gallery Hop. Traditional Irish music will be performed by Toraigh, featuring Mary Dennis on fiddle and Bob Midden on Irish flute. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit will continue through Saturday, June 29th.

The paintings in this exhibit are all richly textured. Although abstract, some of the images suggest landscapes and many of them include the impressions of leaves. “These paintings are all about texture and color,” explains Woodard. “By using lots of texture, my mark-making is much more apparent to the viewer. So I’m using texture as a way to connect with the viewer.”

Woodard begins each piece by applying polymer modeling paste to the surface. Once that’s dry, she applies paint to the textured surface. In some cases, she also brushes paint onto leaves she collects in her yard and prints the impression of the leaves onto the surface. Then, as a final step, she glazes over the painting with a dark color to further enhance the textural effect. “Painting doesn’t have to be two-dimensional,” Woodard points out. “I think adding another dimension stretches me as an artist, and that’s always a good thing!”

Woodard has exhibited in Michigan and Indiana as well as Ohio. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in Studio Art from Indiana University.

Akimbo Gallery is open from noon to 5pm, Wednesday through Saturday. For more information, call 419-806-9116.
