"When Silence Speaks Louder Than Words..."

Silence is not weakness—it is wisdom in motion.

In a world that often demands immediate reactions, silence can be your greatest source of strength. It protects your peace, guards your purpose, and creates space for clarity and growth. Silence keeps distractions at a distance, allows reflection to deepen, and helps you move with intention rather than emotion.

It is within silence that we reconnect with ourselves, strengthen our faith, and prepare for what comes next. Not every battle requires a response. Not every challenge deserves your energy.

Protect your peace. Trust your process. Move with purpose.

And when you finally choose to speak, let your words carry the power of conviction, truth, and intention.

Be still. Be intentional.
Reclaim your power.

A portion of the TAW personal collection acquired in Kumasi, Ghana between 2003–2004. These monumental, hand-carved sculptures reflect the rich artistic heritage of Ashanti-region carving communities surrounding Kumasi, known for their mastery in transforming dense hardwood into expressive cultural works.

Far from mass-produced tourist items, these pieces demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship through deep relief carving, elongated anatomical abstraction, and thoughtful use of negative space. Each work is meticulously finished using traditional hand tools passed down through generations of Ghanaian artisans.

Carved from solid hardwood, the sculptures stand as both artistic and cultural statements—embodying themes of ancestry, resilience, balance, elevation, and the enduring spirit of the African diaspora. They sit at the intersection of tradition, abstraction, and timeless storytelling.

TAW African Art proudly honors Kine Aw of Senegal as part of our ongoing "Poem to Canvas" series—a celebration of the powerful dialogue between spoken word and visual storytelling across the African Diaspora.

Featured here is "Double Date", a captivating work that embodies Kine Aw’s distinctive contemporary African aesthetic. Through expressive forms, rich textures, and layered symbolism, her art explores themes of identity, womanhood, resilience, heritage, and the enduring strength of African culture.

Kine Aw’s work bridges tradition and modernity, creating paintings that are both visually compelling and deeply reflective. Her ability to translate emotion, memory, and cultural experience onto canvas has earned international recognition among collectors and admirers of contemporary African art.

At TAW, we are honored to celebrate artists whose work preserves, elevates, and reimagines African narratives for a global audience.

Kine, we deeply appreciate your artistry, vision, and contribution to the cultural legacy of the African Diaspora.

Where African Art, Culture, and Legacy Converge.

Some wisdom stays with you forever.

This morning, I found myself thinking about my aunt and the conversations we used to have before she passed. We laughed, reflected on life, and talked about relationships, growth, and the importance of alignment.

One thing she told me that never left my mind was this:
When choosing a partner, make sure they move the way you move emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, and in how they support your growth.

Because caring about someone is not always enough to build a healthy future together. Sometimes maturity is being honest early instead of forcing something that eventually turns into pain later.

That conversation still speaks to me years later. 💙

"The Right People Can Change Your Entire Life"

I’ve learned that one of the greatest gifts in life is having someone who can pull you out of dark moments, remind you who you are, and help you keep moving forward.

Not everybody has that kind of support system — someone who answers the call, speaks life into you, and walks with you through every season. When you find people like that, cherish them.

Real love shows up consistently. Real guidance changes lives. 💙

As members of the Bowie Arts Committee and the TAW African Art Gallery, we proudly congratulate Cheryl McKinney on being selected as the Poet Laureate for the City of Bowie.

During the official swearing-in ceremony held on May 18th, Cheryl delivered an original poem that beautifully reflected both the spirit of community and the power of artistic expression. Surrounded by members of the Bowie Arts Committee, the Mayor, and City Council staff, the occasion marked not only a personal achievement, but also an important cultural milestone for the city.

As Bowie’s Poet Laureate, Cheryl now serves as a literary ambassador for the community — using poetry and storytelling to inspire civic engagement, celebrate culture, support the arts, and help document the evolving identity of Bowie through creative expression.

Her selection followed a competitive process in which candidates submitted original works for consideration. Cheryl’s poem, Suburban Oasis, created to commemorate the grand opening of the Strata Amphitheater, helped distinguish her voice, vision, and commitment to the arts within the Bowie community.

Moments like these also remind us of the importance of residents attending local council meetings and public ceremonies. These gatherings provide valuable insight into arts initiatives, cultural development, public investment, and the future direction of our communities.

An informed and engaged community helps shape a stronger city.

Congratulations again to Cheryl Mckinney on this well-deserved honor and continued success in representing the literary and cultural spirit of Bowie.

Behind me is one of my favorite paintings from Brazil, created by artist Jorge Santos Silva and acquired for the TAW personal collection in 2005.

I first came across Santos in Rio de Janeiro, where local artists were selling their work near the beachfront. A few of his paintings immediately stood out — this piece especially. A contemporary mixed-media work deeply rooted in Brazil’s rich Afro-Brazilian cultural presence, it reflects a layered visual language of identity, spirituality, ancestry, rhythm, and collective memory.

Executed through expressive line work, abstraction, texture, collage-like layering, and symbolic facial imagery, the painting creates movement and emotional depth throughout the composition. The repeated eyes and fragmented forms seem to evoke observation, consciousness, interconnectedness, and the many untold stories carried throughout the African diaspora in Brazil.

While limited biographical information is publicly available on Jorge Santos Silva, his work reflects qualities often associated with contemporary Afro-Brazilian artistic expression — merging modern abstraction with cultural symbolism, history, and spiritual undertones.

After doing further research on Santos, it appears he is still actively creating art and currently has a gallery/shop in P**a, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. You can also find more of his work on Facebook under “Manchas em Movimento."

For me as a collector, this piece represents far more than aesthetics; it is a visual conversation between Africa, Brazil, memory, identity, and diaspora.

“When people forget their past, someone else gets to decide their future.”

Powerful words shared this morning alongside reflections on reading, discipline, growth, and self-awareness. Knowledge is more than information — it’s resistance, preservation, and empowerment.

In a world full of distractions, choosing to read, learn, and strengthen the mind is an act of intentional growth. Just as we care for the body through nutrition and exercise, we must also feed the mind and spirit.

Featured in this reflection is Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi — a powerful reminder of the importance of history, memory, and understanding.

Growth is holistic.
Mind. Body. Spirit.

Be blessed. Peace.

A convergence of vision, sculpture, symbolism, and diasporic storytelling within the TAW personal collection.

The featured painting was inspired by an original concept developed by TAW and brought to life by Cuban artist. It portrays a powerful figure emerging from the sea while breaking free from chains — a striking symbol of liberation, transcendence, spiritual rebirth, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of freedom throughout the African diaspora. This image also became the original visual inspiration behind the early TAW logo and identity.

The central figure within the painting was itself inspired by an original bronze sculpture from the TAW collection created by Washington, DC artist, whose work explores strength, movement, emotional struggle, and human perseverance through expressive figurative form.

Positioned beside the painting is a remarkable cobalt stone sculpture by renowned Zimbabwean sculptor, acquired through a U.S.-based gallery. Bonjisi is internationally celebrated within the Shona sculpture movement for his fluid abstract forms, spiritual symbolism, and ability to transform stone into graceful meditations on ancestry, humanity, and emotional connection.

Together, these works reflect the layered reality of the African diaspora — where ideas travel across continents, evolve through collaboration, and become new visual narratives rooted in identity, struggle, liberation, and hope.

At TAW, art is not simply collected — it is connected through history, meaning, and cultural dialogue.

TAW Diaspora Art Collection (1)

A glimpse into the evolving personal collection of TAW African Art Gallery — carefully acquired through years of travel, cultural immersion, artistic discovery, and relationship-building across the African Diaspora between 1999–2015.

This curated collection features works sourced from:
• Ghana, Africa — wooden sculptures, ceremonial drums, and paintings
• Salvador Bahia, Brazil — paintings
• Zimbabwe — Shona stone sculptures
• Havana, Cuba — paintings

The majority of these works were birthed from original thoughts, stories, and concepts; carved or painted into one-of-a-kind artworks by master artisans and painters. One painting within the collection was inspired by an existing magazine photograph rather than an original conceptual idea, yet the beauty and emotional power of the piece made it impossible to pass up or place for sale.

For me, these works represent far more than visually pleasing images. They embody history, identity, spirituality, struggle, resilience, ancestry, and cultural continuity. Afrocentric art often carries layered meanings beneath the surface; stories waiting to be interpreted differently by each viewer.

Beauty truly remains in the eye of the beholder… and perhaps that is where the deepest value resides.

At TAW, we don’t simply decorate spaces — we build our home, our memories, and our spirit around curated works of art that speak to the soul.
