Introducing Rick Shaefer

Rick Shaefer is a Connecticut-based artist who holds degrees from ArtCenter College of Design and Duke University. He is a two-time recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and has received multiple grants and fellowship awards from the Connecticut Office of the Arts. His work is held in public and private collections and has been discussed in publications including ARTnews. His exhibition Colossi is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut through November 15.

Working primarily in charcoal, graphite, and ink, Shaefer creates large-scale drawings centered on the natural world. Trees, flowers, animals, icebergs, and other forms become subjects for an intensive exploration of line, scale, texture, and weight. Rather than blending or smudging the medium, he constructs his images through individual marks that remain visible—gestural and almost calligraphic up close, yet resolving into remarkably dimensional images from a distance.

As Shaefer describes his approach, “I tend to always come back to the line work.… A confident fluidity of movement and gesture is what is consciously and unconsciously felt and appreciated by the viewer.”

Join us at Nick Ryan Gallery for “Practice, Studio, Subject”, an artist talk with Berger & Föhr presented in conjunction with Resolution.

Berger & Föhr will discuss their twenty-three-year collaboration and the development of their current Graphite Gradientsand Color Gradients. Made through machine-assisted processes, the drawings emerge from systems of repetition, variation, material, and time.

The conversation will also consider the studio as both a site of production and a subject in itself, and the ways process, tools, and accumulated time become embedded in the work.

San Francisco–based Chen makes paintings rooted in memory - fragmented, shifting, and incomplete. Built through sharply defined planes of color, the images move between recognition and abstraction, breaking apart up close and resolving again at a distance.

An artist talk & drawing demonstration by Berger & Föhr

Saturday, August 29 at 12 PM

Berger & Föhr will give an artist talk and drawing demonstration at Nick Ryan Gallery at 12 PM on Saturday, August 29, during the ongoing exhibition “Resolution”.

The talk will consider the studio as both practice and subject. For twenty-three years, their collaboration has moved between design and art, distinct modes of working across and through concepts, systems, materials, form, and time. Their current drawings have become a way to document that shared time.

In the graphite gradients especially, the work operates as a form of compositional time-keeping. Time is not depicted. It is deposited through pressure, repetition, adjustment, wear, and accumulation.

The demonstration will show part of this process in motion as they operate one of their drawing machines. The machine draws, but it does not decide.

NOW REPRESENTING | SAM CHUNG

We are thrilled to welcome ceramic artist Sam Chung to the Nick Ryan Gallery artist roster.

Sam Chung is a Korean-American ceramic artist and Professor of Ceramics at Arizona State University, where he has taught since 2007. His work reframes historical ceramic forms through a cross-cultural perspective, exploring the fluidity of identity, tradition, and transformation.

He received his MFA from Arizona State University and BA from St. Olaf College and was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Scholar grant in South Korea for the 2021–22 academic year. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally and is held in the collections of the Everson Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Icheon World Ceramic Center, Guldagergaard, and other public collections. His residencies include the Archie Bray Foundation, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center.

“Clouds are an auspicious symbol representing immortality and longevity. I adopted them as a metaphor for my own floating sense of identity between Korean and American cultures. Their ever-changing, formless nature reflects the fluidity of my cross-cultural identity. Metaphorically, they break out of the past while leaving a remnant of tradition intact.”

Daniel Chen’s work moves between image and abstraction, using fragmented planes of color to explore memory, perception, and the ways technology shapes how we record experience. Up close, the image breaks apart; from a distance, the larger picture comes back into view.

For Chen, memory is unstable—details shift, blur, and disappear, while individual fragments still come together to form something recognizable.

Berger & Föhr’s machine-assisted graphite drawings are built through repetition, precision, and gradual material change, resulting in finely calibrated fields of shifting tone.

Each pass is configured by hand and executed by machine, building closely spaced pencil lines into continuous gradients. As the pencil wears, the surface subtly shifts, allowing material and chance to enter an otherwise controlled process.

The resulting works occupy a space between handmade and machine-made, with time and change embedded directly into the surface.

Please join us this Saturday evening for the opening reception of “Resolution”, featuring work by San Francisco–based painter Daniel Chen and Boulder-based artist duo Berger & Föhr.

Daniel Chen’s paintings explore memory, perception, and the increasingly mediated way we experience the world. Using pixelated and fragmented planes, his images shift between abstraction and recognition—breaking apart up close and coming back into focus at a distance.

Berger & Föhr, the collaborative practice of Todd Berger and Lucian Föhr, create geometric abstractions through systems of grids, repetition, proportion, and serial variation. Their machine-assisted drawings are built through successive pencil passes, allowing subtle changes in material, density, and time to become part of the work.

“Resolution” will be on view through September 19, 2026 at Nick Ryan Gallery.

Berger & Föhr see in grids. The grid is not applied after the fact. It is the structure through which compositions are found, varied, tested, and brought into physical form.

Drawings are made in pencil, through a machine-assisted process refined over the better part of a decade. Visible gradients are made from lines too fine and too closely spaced to resolve by eye. They overlap and build, pass over pass, until individual marks become a continuous field. As the pencil wears, less graphite or pigment reaches the paper and each stroke widens—the surface drifts even as the system holds.

None of it is automatic. The machine draws but decides nothing, moving only as each pass is configured for it. The marks are mechanical. The judgment behind them is not. They occupy the space between.

What the gradients hold is time—not a single moment but its passage. The gradients are not an image of change, but change itself, held on paper.

Berger & Föhr is the collaborative practice of Todd Berger (b. 1975, Chicago, IL) and Lucian Föhr (b. 1988, Boulder, CO). Working together since 2002, the duo creates geometric abstractions through machine-assisted drawing and other process-based media. Their work is grounded in systems, repetition, and the interplay between human decision-making and predetermined structures.

“Resolution: Daniel Chen | Berger & Föhr” opens this Saturday, August 8, with a reception from 5–8 PM. All artists will be in attendance.
