National A&P Historical Museum and Research Center

National A&P Historical Museum and Research Center Look for a grand reopening announcement in time for the Summer 2019 tourism season.

The National A&P Historical Museum and Research Center will be closed until further notice while we move the museum to new, larger quarters in Boulder Junction. The National A&P Historical Museum and Research Center is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural and business legacy of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P). Much of today's modern food products and food retailing industry w

as pioneered by A&P, including many industry firsts including the A&P Economy Store one-stop grocery shopping contest, private label brands, the first branded generics and the manufacturer-distributor-retailer vertically-integrated model. And while it didn't invent the concept, A&P's sheer size and wide scope did much to popularize the 1930's Depression-era supermarket concept on a national scale.

From the 1880s into the 1890s, collectible Victorian-era trade cards were popular customer loyalty-building giveaway "premiums" for purchases valued at a certain amount of A&P-branded goods, including spices, extracts, baking power and the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company's "celebrated teas & coffees." Other A&P premiums from the 1880s to 1910s were of a more elaborate nature, including cookware, china, silverware, tablecloths and small home furnishings.

Between the late 1950’s and the mid 1970’s, A&P went through three logo iterations on this basic label design, including this streamlined, simplified version of A&P’s traditional medallion used in the early to mid 1970’s (left). With the late 1975 introduction of A&P’s “sunrise” logo by global creative consultancy Lippincott & Margulies, A&P packaging would undergo a much needed and long overdue graphic design overhaul beginning in 1976 (right).
