OCT Contemporary Art Terminal - OCAT Shenzhen

OCAT Shenzhen is delighted to present the Schizophonia Exhibition Series. The series is curated by artist/curator Dajun Yao, which consists of three parts: the Archive of Chinese Sound Art is from August 1 to December 13, which also sets background for the whole series; the Sound Installation exhibition will be on from November 14 to December 13; and the Live Performance will take place at the night of November 14.

Schizophonia: Sonic Alienation

Schizophonia is a term coined by Canadian scholar Murray Schafer in 1971. Borrowing from “schizophrenia,” the word describes the separation between sounds from their original context, a result of the Electric Revolution with the invention of devices such as telephone, radio, and phonograph. Schafer was actually using the term to criticize the sonic aberration and pollution in our modern society. Yet, the fact is, schizophonia is a crucial part of modernity. Looking beyond Schafer’s reductionistic environmentalist ideology, we will examine the massive possibilities offered by schizophonia, especially in the realm of art. This exhibition series will look at the variety of issues brought up by works that consciously foreground the schizophonic nature of sound art, and, at the same time, attempt to see how sound can be a covert coding system through which we can understand the world.

Schizophonia: Archive of Chinese Sound Art

At the beginning of the present century, I advanced a concept of “archival listening”: in the near future, all we listen to will be random-accessed from a single, massive collection of music and sound; there will be no more personal collections. This will also be made possible by exactly the phenomenon of schizophonia. To any listener, sound objects will have no spatial, temporal, or pricing differences; all sounds will be instantaneous playbacks. Of course, the exchange and aesthetic value system upon which music and sound have always relied on will therefore be facing imminent collapse. Today, this appalling idea has been realized by the latest streaming services, such as Apple Music and Spotify. All sonic production, which includes even sonic social media, will be nothing more than adding entries to the collective archive of human sounds.

The present exhibition of Archive of Chinese Sound Art will view the example of Chinese sound art from this angle. The selections are taken from the most extensive archive of Chinese sound art. A wide variety of sound art works can be accessed via listening stations and video monitors. Rare physical objects such as CDs, posters and printed matter will also be on display. A custom designed Timeline of Chinese Sound Art will allow the viewer to experience the development of sound art in China through interactive listening.

Join us for the RPM closing reception tomorrow, Fri. April 26 from 4:30-6:30pm in downtown Hamilton at 19 Lebanon St. (the former Crowe's Drugstore). A number of Colgate students and faculty, and members of the Hamilton community, participated in the RPM: Sound Art China workshops held during the opening week at the end of March. Since then as many as 10 new sound art projects and related works have been created. Tomorrow these works will be showcased and their makers will be introduced. We will also play RPM Trivia where you could win your very own personal Buddha machine. So come, join us for the closing festivities!
