✨ Have you experienced Valkyrie Mumbet yet? ✨

Known for her unprecedented multimedia works, Joana Vasconcelos, in her first U.S. solo show, honors Elizabeth “Mumbet” Freeman, an enslaved woman whose court battle for her freedom in 1781 helped make slavery illegal in Massachusetts. The large-scale installation entitled Valkyrie Mumbet, is the newest in her Valkyries series, named after Norse female war goddesses, which pays homage to inspiring women.

On view are several vintage baby bottles and other designs documenting the evolution of infant feeding and care.

“Designing Motherhood: Things That Make and Break Our Births,” lays bare ways in which powerful white men have dictated the terms of reproduction for two centuries. Soon after the show opened at the MassArt Art Museum, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The topic couldn’t be more timely, or more sobering.
🔥
"Design history reveals a culture’s values, power structures, and fears. Attitudes about caregiving, reproductive freedom, race, and gender are forged into the tools, devices, and history on display, and the art dives into the sweat and sweetness of motherhood."
🔥
"The realm of reproduction is all that and more: love, heartache, grief, union, joy. The more closely we examine how society tries to rein in such unquantifiable things, as “Designing Motherhood” masterfully does, the more we’ll be able to tolerate the messiness of being human. Even a disastrous Supreme Court ruling can’t turn back that tide."

The show is the brainchild of Michelle Millar Fisher and Amber Winick — and its gestation took longer than expected. “We’ve been told, ‘There’s no audience.’ ‘It’s a niche issue.’ ‘It doesn’t belong in a design museum.’ ‘It doesn’t belong in an art museum,’” said Mill...

In Designing Motherhood contemporary artworks and medical devices designed to facilitate reproductive health are intermingled in the gallery to give a comprehensive look at human reproduction.

We are thrilled to share the work of ‘07. In 2011, the artist began an ongoing project photographing their family, making images of themself, their partner Vanessa, and eventually their daughter, Elinor.

This portrait captures a moment when both were exhausted but elated, like many new parents.

In Jess’ words, “I’m interested in documenting my own family and also creating representations of q***r and gender expansive families and butch/transmasculine parenting.”

🎟️ Admission is FREE, advance tickets not required. On view June 11.

✨ OPENING SATURDAY! ✨

"Designing Motherhood: Things That Make and Break Our Births" explores the arc of human reproduction through the lens of art and design.

The exhibition demonstrates the evolution of rights and societal norms pertaining to con(tra)ception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences over the last 150 years, highlighting that birth—and the material culture that surrounds it—impacts every living person.

While being born is a universal human experience, the designs that shape it are not. Designing Motherhood invites you to consider why and how we have developed designs to facilitate reproductive health.

🎟️ Admission is FREE, advance tickets not required

This exhibition was organized by the curatorial team. The project’s local thought partner is which will open as Boston’s first independent and freestanding birth center in 2023.
