In the Studio: Juan Obando "Game Changers"

"Game Changers" artist Juan Obando takes us on a behind-the-scenes look at the inspiration and making of his modified video game "Pro Revolution Soccer."

Juan Obando is a Colombian artist whose work focuses on the critical intervention of social systems and the subsequent production of video-performances, post-digital objects, and screen-based installations — presenting the screen as a site where ideology confronts aesthetics and new worlds are speculated.

For "Vitreous Bodies," an exhibition in our Paine Gallery in 2017, master glass artist Kanik Chung (1968-2013) drew 43 portraits of all the presidents of the United States from George Washington to Barack Obama. The drawings are aligned so that the resulting image is a blurred and obfuscated picture of the combined history of political leadership in America. This sculptural installation embodies the overlapping, colliding, and connected beliefs, policies, and legacy of past presidents that have shaped the United States.

As a reminder, today is the last day to register to vote in Massachusetts. Just days after the last United States presidential inauguration, we opened our exhibition "DRAW/Boston" which included Rirkrit Tiravanija's interactive "Demonstration Drawings." Visitors experienced Rirkrit's conceptual examination of people gathering together to act out ideas as Massachusetts College of Art and Design students participated in the live-action mural. This work remains a reflection on some of the most pressing political topics of our time. Although presented as moments from our past, "Demonstration Drawings" remains rooted in the present, and the action of coming together in the here and now.

Spanning from 1490 to 2121, Skawennati's machinima series "TimeTraveller™" explores Indigenous histories and possible futures. In the free-to-watch series, a young Kanien’kéha (Mohawk) man travels through time and encounters people from various tribes — past, present, and future — who take a stand for their beliefs and rights.

As co-director of AbTeC: Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace, Skawennati is particularly interested in connecting the deep past with the far future through new media. AbTeC's goal is to ensure Indigenous presence in the web pages, online environments, video games, and virtual worlds that comprise cyberspace.

On Indigenous People's Day, explore important historical moments and futuristic narratives in Skawennati's "TimeTraveller™." www.timetravellertm.com
