The Boston-based artist, Karmimadeebora McMillan mines Black
material culture and historical archives to reimagine Black histories
through diverse media. In her first major solo exhibition in the region,
McMillan creates an immersive installation featuring animation,
painting, and sound. The exhibition is a kaleidoscopic journey through
time that draws inspiration from sci-fi, speculative fiction, and
Afrofuturism. Wandering stars...for whom it is reserved...the blackness...
the darkness...forever, the title excerpted from a song by the British
band, Portishead, re-envisions the past, present, and future to explore
the power of memory and how Black histories are held and carried.

Sometimes my dreams are informed by places I’ve been, people I know, or things I experience when I’m awake. Often, the imagery or plot is a mix of the familiar and unfamiliar. Sometimes I’m in a world of colors, sometimes there is music. The more I think about them, the more I am able to see.

Looking forward to spring. This piece is based on the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells, Maine - in June, when it’s like a jungle. The ferns get so big there!
