After 30 years, International Poster Gallery is winding down operations and formally closing our doors at the end of October. Owner and Director Jim Lapides is retiring and transitioning from the Gallery to begin his next chapter of life.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us in these final weeks by phone, email, or by limited appointment availability in the gallery. Subject to time constraints, we are still selling select inventory, and please note that we have recently added a few special New Arrivals.

It has been a wonderful run, and we thank you for making it all possible. We have so enjoyed helping you find posters that are meaningful and beautiful, that excite your passions, and that help make your homes and offices a reflection of who you are.

Each poster tells a unique story about art, advertising and history. Each is a mirror of society. And we have had many great ones, often in superb condition, with many rarely seen by this generation of collectors or dealers. The fact that many of our posters are now in museum collections only confirms that. What is more, even after all these years of increased collecting activity, we still feel posters are one of the best values in art.

The Gallery is proud to have organized or contributed to 50 curated exhibitions on and off-site that explored diverse facets of design history and expanded the poster field. Beginning with our intense focus on Italian, Swiss and Soviet posters, we proceeded to take fresh looks at poster styles from Art Nouveau and Early Modernism to Object Posters, Machine Age, Mid Century and Post Modernism.

We have delved deeply into subjects such as the Golden Age of Travel, African, Australian and Pan Am Travel posters, Mather Work Incentive posters, Winter Sport, Bolshevik and War posters, Perestroika and AIDS posters. We’ve also highlighted trailblazing designers including Herbert Leupin, Paul Rand, and Armin Hofmann…the list goes on!

From Boston's Newbury Street to the South End, these years at International Poster Gallery have been a fantastic adventure.

Thank you for your shared passion, your friendship, and your trust. We will treasure it always!

To offset the loss of business due to immigration quotas, the Depression and world tensions in the late 1930s, Hamburg - America Line created what would become a pioneering cruise line operation. The Company in short order created a program of exotic cruises to every corner of the globe, designing and retrofitting ships to take on their new task.

The company promoted those destinations with a beautiful series of eye-catching posters. Their goal was to attract a well-healed, sophisticated traveler to the far corners of the world in search of adventure and natural history. Here leading posterist Albert Fuss evokes a perfect moment that one might experience on an arctic cruise.

This stunning poster is one of the finest from the Perestroika period. It shows a full length monolithic portrait of Josef Stalin made up of a gigantic brick prison with barred windows. The message was that Stalin's terror and secret police were out of favor, replaced by a spirit of glasnost, or openness in Soviet society.

This design was a high quality silkscreen poster, made in a limited edition in 1990, perhaps for an important conference or meeting. Extremely rare, in fine condition.

Featured Vintage Poster: We won't let this repeat itself! by E. Tsvik (1990).

Mauzan's close up of three men's noses and intently focused eyes on a wheel of parmesan cheese is one of the classics of all poster art. As the poster's master of outrageous caricature, his work is unforgettable. Strongly influenced by Cappiello, he obviously agreed with the latter's statement that "Surprise is the foundation of advertising; it is its necessary condition."

Mauzan was born on the French Riviera, but moved to Italy in 1905. He created hundreds of posters for the Italian silent film industry in Turin, and then went to work at Ricordi from 1912 to 1917. After the war, he worked for the Maga agency in Milan, and then established his own company. Many of his greatest works were created in Argentina where he worked from 1926 to 1932.

This superb poster is for the Russian release of Buster Keaton's silent movie hit from 1924, "Sherlock Jr". Keaton plays a movie projectionist who is framed when his girlfriend is robbed. He dreams he is a great detective and can solve the case. The poster shows him, with magnifying glass in hand, studying the manual "How to Become a Sleuth."

The design casts a spotlight on our would-be detective; his glass is beautifully rendered with a reflection of a window upon it. The dramatic close-up would have been quite effective on the city street.

This is a delightful early example of the humorous product advertising style from Basel that dominated Swiss design beginning in the early Fifties. This poster for a vitamin infused punch was playful and relaxed and perfectly fit the the post-war Baby Boom era underway around the globe.

Fritz Buhler studied in Switzerland and Germany and traveled in France; he created dozens of successful posters and could work masterfully in every style. His studio trained many important artists, including Armin Hofmann, a future leader of the International Typographic Style. Buhler's work is well represented in many museums, including New York's MoMA.

This rare and magnificent large-format poster for Cordial Campari is a masterpiece of Italian Art Deco. The cubistic still life composition, with its dramatic use of light and shadow and rich, deep colors, would be a grand statement for a bar or dining area.

Marcello Nizzoli was a creative genius who made significant contributions as an artist, graphic and industrial designer and architect. His posters were as brilliant and varied as France's great posterist AM Cassandre, utilizing the vocabularies of Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism. As the head of design at Olivetti, he created the first ergonomically advanced business machines in the '50s.

Clementine-Hélène Dufau was an accomplished French artist and designer, and one of few women active in the field of poster design in the 1890s. In 1898, Dufau was commissioned to design a poster for a new daily publication, La Fronde ("The Sling"), which was founded by journalist and activist Marguerite Durand. An important and controversial feminist platform, the newspaper was exclusively run by women and advocated for women’s rights and representation in a variety of domains, including law, politics, and the arts.

Dufau’s beautifully allegorical poster shows a woman in green, who has been interpreted as representing Marguerite Durand, leading the way to a group of women and indicating the great expanse of Paris below. Dufau suggests Durand’s determination and far-sighted view, with a refined and flowing style that perhaps also served to legitimize the aims of the publication to the public.

This Norman Rockwell poster of a worn out machine gunner staying at his post has become one of the icons of World War II. Its call for increased war production struck a nerve.

By the end of the war, the United States economy was larger than all other combatants in the war combined. American resolve and industrial might was greatly underestimated by Germany, Japan and Italy. In fine condition.
