KHOTAN,
Late 19th Century.
East Turkestan.

A charming pair of Khotan rugs displaying mixtures of styles and patterns. The central field pattern depicts vases with pomegranate bearing branches which is a typical pattern in Yarkand rugs.

The repeating sw****ka border shows the Chinese influence in carpets from the region.

Lastly, the pair was sourced out of Lhasa and the unusual size of the rugs only makes me wonder if they were commissioned to be used in Tibet as Khadens.

An extremely rare Ningxia Square from the 1800s. Probably the earliest and the only antique rug with a proper smiley face. Although the smiley face was unintentional, certain dyes have faded over the centuries resulting in this bizarre yet cheerful art.

Chämghoe, འཆམ་གོས་

Tibet, 17th/18th Century.

———————————————

Chäm is a Tibetan Buddhist ritual dance, performed on special occasions to mark important religious events. The Chäm is carried out as a practical means to purify the land and the people. Monks put on these wide sleeved robes and masks of deities and demons and perform dramatic ceremonial dances.

This particular Tibetan silk dancer’s robe is made with brocade dating back to Kangxi period.
