Did you know that before US 80, there was the Dixie-Overland Highway? Connecting Savannah to San Diego, this 1917 grass-roots "auto trail" came through Shreveport-Bossier and paved the way for modern travel! Created by auto clubs as the first year-round, coast-to-coast route, the historic highway kept the country moving through WWI and laid the foundation for today's interstate system.

From clearing the massive "Great Raft" logjam to designing shallow-draft boats that could handle changing river depths, steamboats completely reshaped trade and daily life in Bossier Parish! But the journey wasn't without risk, over 150 steamboats met their end along the river due to dangerous snags and sudden accidents.
