"The Flags From Mississippi: Emblems Through Time" special exhibit at the Two Mississippi Museums houses rare flags spanning periods of Mississippi history, including WWII. This 48-star flag once covered the coffin of James David Dickerson, a WWII soldier from Mississippi. He survived the Battle of Iwo Jima but was killed during a machine gun drill in Hawaii, near the town of Hilo, in 1945. The practice of using an American flag as a coffin drape to honor soldiers and veterans has been observed since the nation’s beginning. Visit the Museum of Mississippi History to learn more about the state's role in WWII.

Join us at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, for “Flags From Mississippi Gallery Talk: Conservation” where MDAH director of conservation Kathryn Etre will discuss the preservation of flags within the exhibit and the role of museum conservators to help preserve these artifacts for future generations. The event is free and open to the public.
