It was muggy and hot, with temps in the 80s all afternoon long, on June 1, 1972, at Bonner Flats east of Missoula. We’ll embrace 50s and rain today to mark that “historic” day when UM students launched the annual Library Benefit beer bust that came to be known as the Aber Day Kegger.
For those braving the elements, you know what to wear. Let’s try to be there by or before 1 at (roughly) 1644 Deer Creek Road. Bring the beverage of your choice.
Confirmation last night that Steve and MaryAnn Riddle are in Missoula and plan to be there. We’ll pray for sun next year.
The gate where we walk from is 3.2 miles past Bandmann Bridge on Deer Creek Road. The walk on a dwindling two-track is one-half mile to the meadow. No admission. Donations go to UM and, we hope, the Mansfield Library.

A few logistics leading up to our history hike into 1972 on Sunday (May 31). We’ll start at 1 p.m. from the west side of the crossing of Deer Creek, 1644 Deer Creek Road, but parking is limited near the gate. Roadside parking is available across the creek. Carpooling is advised, just as it was on June 1, 1972, when the first of what became the huge library benefit keggers associated with Aber Day took place.

Bring beverages, something to sit on and bug spray, and maybe a suitable musical instrument. Fingers crossed, Mission Mountain Wood Band alum Steve Riddle and his wife MaryAnn will be on hand with what he calls a “funky little banjo uke” to play a few tunes.

We’ll walk an easy half mile into the meadow they called Bonner Flats where we believe the stage, 125 kegs and 3,000 partiers were located on June 1, 1972. We’ll maybe take a few minutes to set the scene and then see what happens.

We’ll be on the Lolo Forest at all times. No campfires and no trace left behind. As in that first kegger, there’ll be no restroom facilities, so trees are our friends. Even if we’re between rain showers it’s almost certain to be wet. As Neil Diamond said, we’ll stay until it’s time for us to go. All donations will find their way to the University of Montana, preferably to the Mansfield Library if I can find a way to get them there.

Montana 250th Commission

July 4, 2026, will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. This occasion represents a unique opportunity to engage with our nation’s history, including the millennia of Indigenous history prior to the founding of the United States, and to reflect upon how this knowledge of our country’s past can build a stronger future.

The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established by Congress in 2016 to orchestrate nationwide activities in recognition of the 250th anniversary. Many state governments across the country have created their own commissions to implement commemorations on a local level, adapting initiatives to the distinct historic contexts of their states.

Accordingly, the 2023 Montana Legislature passed House Bill 0377, establishing the Montana 250th Commission to coordinate statewide efforts to commemorate the United States Semiquincentennial. The objectives of this commission are to promote civic engagement and increase public awareness of United States and Montana government and history, including the history of Tribal nations. The eleven-member commission will work with partners to:

Increase participation in the United States civics test, as well as youth proficiency in United States and Montana government and history and in the distinct and unique heritage of American Indians through Indian Education for All (IEFA);

Recognize schools for outstanding achievement in civics and proficiency in history, government, and IEFA;

Plan, coordinate, and implement an overall program to build public awareness of and foster public participation in celebrating and commemorating the 250th anniversary of the independence and founding of the United States;

Draw attention to the achievements, honors, innovations, and significance of the people in this state and recommend ways for this state to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the independence and founding of the United States;

Recognize the vibrant Indigenous cultures living in this place in 1776;

Emphasize the service and sacrifices of veterans who have secured and preserved American independence and freedom;

And celebrate and commemorate with events and activities throughout this state.

Our May History “Hike” is coming up fast!
Sunday, May 31: We’ll meet at 1 p.m. near the Deer Creek Crossing east of Missoula to amble the half-mile to the site of the first of what became known as the Aber Day Keggers.

Anyone around from the bands that played that day and night, June 1, 1972?
Arrow, Big Sky Country Band, Bitterroot, Oaken Line,
Tender Green, Weston Davis R***e

No kegs this time so BYOB. We’ll need some pickers among the grinners. While the guys from the iconic Mission Mountain Wood Band didn’t start their Aber Day reign until 1975 at the Miller Creek rodeo grounds, there’s a strong chance at least one of them will come packing strings on May 31.

No charge but as usual with these history hikes, donations are welcome. In keeping with Aber Day tradition, all contributions will go to the UM library!
