65 years ago today, Astronaut Gus Grissom became the second American in space!

A member of the original Mercury 7 Astronauts, Gus Grissom flew aboard his spacecraft Liberty Bell 7 for a suborbital flight on July 21, 1961. Largely a repeat of Alan Shepard’s flight that occurred two months prior, Grissom’s mission successfully splashed down into the Atlantic Ocean 15.5 minutes after liftoff. While awaiting recovery of his spacecraft, explosive bolts on the hatch erroneously detonated and allowed the capsule to take on water. While Gus Grissom was retrieved from the sea, Liberty Bell 7 sank more than 16,000 feet and was not recovered from the bottom of the ocean until 1999.

Meet the crew of Artemis III! This newly-announced crew will be part of an earth-orbital mission in 2027 to assess the Artemis lunar landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin, among other objectives.

The museum is heartbroken to share the passing of museum advisor Dan Green, who passed away on May 22nd.

Dan Green joined the museum’s Advisory Board in 2022 after decades of pioneering work across numerous spaceflight programs. Dan played an instrumental role in the development of Titan rocket engines and Apollo Program systems, had a part in the merger of McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft, was a staunch advocate for the creation of America's first space station Skylab, and rounded out his storied career by serving as a vice president - general manager at McDonnell Douglas working on several space and advanced proprietary programs.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Lindenwood University's J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts for our showing of the new documentary, Apollo 1! With Lowell Grissom and over 150 guests were in attendance, this successful event paves the way for our museum to hold more exciting screenings in the future.

65 years ago today, Astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space! On May 5, 1961, Shepard piloted Mercury capsule Freedom 7 on a 15.5-minute suborbital mission on top of a redstone rocket.
