Find inspiration and get creative at BAM during First Thursday today! Admission is “pay what you can,” and the Museum is open late, until 7 p.m., to encourage Access for All. Experience three ✨NEW✨ exhibitions at BAM this month, including “James Lavadour: Land of Origin,” “Passage: Hong Chun Zhang,” and “Common Threads: 100 Years of Quilts.”

Registration is OPEN for BAM’s 2026/2027 “Seniors Create! Lifelong Learning Arts Masterclass,” and sessions are starting to fill up! Learn directly from professional artists during these 8-session workshops for people ages 55 and better.

⏰ This is the last week to register for the “Art + Nature: Plein Air Painting” workshop with teaching artist Pam McKnight, which begins on September 15th. Enjoy the beauty of the outdoors while painting in the fresh air. Utilize observational skills, develop patience, and work on embracing imperfection, during this workshop—no prior painting experience required!

✨ TWO new exhibitions! ✨ Visit BAM this weekend to be among the first to experience “Common Threads: 100 Years of Quilts” and the site-specific installation “Passage” by artist Hong Chun Zhang. Take a break from the heat and smoke as you explore exhibitions the whole family will enjoy.

“Common Threads” brings together a selection of American quilts from the exceptional private collection of Karen Taber. Created between the 1860s and the 1940s, these textiles trace nearly a century of transformation in craft, culture, and daily life. Hand-stitched from salvaged fabrics, grain sacks, and cherished garments, these textiles reveal the resourcefulness and artistry of their makers — primarily women whose creative labors have often gone unrecognized in traditional art history. “Common Threads” invites viewers to reconsider the definitions of art and craft, and recognize the quilt as a vital form of American visual culture — an object that holds art history in its patterns and in every stitch.

“Passage” is a new, large-scale installation by artist Hong Chun Zhang. Born in China during the Cultural Revolution and raised in a family of artists, Hong makes large ink paintings of hair using a traditional Chinese painting style called Gongbi. Through these artworks, she meditates about who she is and how her life has changed after moving from China to the United States. In her artwork, hair holds memory and culture, and it is something people carry with them wherever they go. In this installation at BAM, several ink paintings are placed together to form the shape of a traditional East Asian robe. The paintings are made on soft white Italian Alcantara fabric. The robe shape represents history and tradition, while the flowing images of hair suggest movement, change, and identity.

Find inspiration and get creative at BAM during First Thursday today! Admission is “pay what you can,” and the Museum is open late, until 7 p.m., to encourage Access for All. Experience BAM’s current exhibitions, including “Here We Have Idaho: Belonging | Sofía Jaramillo and Ceci Richardson-Salvador,” which closes later this month on August 23rd.

🎨 Drop in from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and get creative in our FREE Studio Art Exploration program in BAM’s Education Studios. Create a Color Field artwork using watercolor crayons, inspired by “Four Masterworks from the National Gallery of Art.”
