We have some very exciting exhibitions coming up at the gallery this summer!

First up in July, we're thrilled to partner with the Hagerman Valley Historical Society & Museum to present An Artist's Journey: Archie Boyd Teater.

Born in Boise in 1901, Teater became a prolific impressionist painter. With a popular studio in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Teater found success painting western scenes, commissioned portraits, and the Teton Range. His art funded trips around the world, and in the 1950s, a studio/home in Idaho designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The only Frank Lloyd Wright designed structure in Idaho, Teater's Knoll still overlooks the Snake River.

Join us for the opening reception on July 2 from 5–9 pm and mark your calendars for a special talk with scholar Lester D. Taylor on July 17 at 5 pm.

"I began experimenting with polychrome on a piece I did in 2021. It was a piece titled Family, and I introduced the paint sparingly. Subsequently, I added polychrome to a couple of additional pieces as I was so moved. I found the result pleasing because it gave me another means of introducing contrast. Juxtaposing color against the monochrome of the wood provided the distinct contrast that was my objective, but in each instance the addition was somewhat timid and tentative.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve struggled with how to be more “bold” with the coloring without detracting from the inherent beauty of the wood that is the inspiration for my work. A second consideration was the nature of contrast that I was seeking. In the past I had juxtaposed the chaotic, organic and distressed areas against both geometric and non-geometric shapes. I felt that the bold influence of color along with the organically distressed areas needed a stronger background. The background is the shape of the wood - the “canvas” from which I work. I decided to use harder, more rigid lines for my background: squares, cubes, rectangles and triangles.

The initial results are represented herein. I use primary colors: blues, reds and yellow ochre (almost primary!). These tend to allow the eye to blend them into secondary colors which are somewhat “hidden” under the white overpaint. The objective is to force exploration with a deeper look. I also used a similar concept on the bases of the “Pillar” pieces where I tried to represent them as antique stone with subtle colors hiding in the crevasses and recesses." -- Gary Holt Peer

"To embrace is an act of accepting. It can be saying “yes” to the imperfections and organic nature of process. In my case, the process is hand-dyeing fabric using a low-water immersion technique. I choose this method because Boise is located in a high desert and I also embrace our responsibility to take care of our environment.

Beauty in the discarded and abandoned in the landscape. A story in the body language of the figure. I feel interesting subjects combined with a solid composition is the foundation of a good painting. Please join us this Thursday, May 21 at 6:00 pm for an artist talk with Rachel Teannalach and Geoffrey Krueger. Hear directly from these two renowned Idaho artists. They'll share what inspires them, walk you through their creative processes, and give you a closer look at the pieces on view.

"The three large paintings in this show are scenes that I have looked at and thought about for many years.

Dr. John's Farm is right in the middle of Nampa behind our friend's house. I've painted the farm a few times from different vantage points. I wanted to capture the feeling of a hidden place, forgotten, deserted.

Spring River and March River are scenes of the Boise as seen from Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell. As I was planning these pieces they got larger and larger to create the feeling of actually being there kind of hovering over the scene.

I am always on the lookout for paintings. The shadow of a tree on a wall, the way light falls on a distant hill is endlessly fascinating and challenging to create with paint." -- Geoffrey Krueger
