JOSEPH BOGGS SOCIETY QUARTERLY MEETING 8/19/2026

BOGGSTOWN SCHOOL BELL — In 2010 we learned this bell had been stored in the Triton Central High School bus barn since the Boggstown School was torn down in 1983. The Boggs Society wrote a letter to the school board requesting the bell, and it is in our entry as shown here in 2026. It was made by the George L. Hanks company of Cincinnati, Ohio, and George was related to Nancy Hanks Lincoln. It was in the top of the last Boggstown School from 1912 to 1983, as well as the school in the same location from 1872.

Our August 19th 7pm Quarterly Meeting program will be by Greg Weaver from Hendricks Township, who retired this year as a political journalist at the Indianapolis Business Journal after earlier at the Indianapolis Star. His PowerPoint presentation "From Front Pages to Facebook: How local news has changed and why it matters." will look at the financial reasons behind the shrinking of local newspapers and TV news teams, how that affects our democracy and where to find new and reliable local news sources.
He’ll also solicit ideas on the most interesting and significant barns in the county, as he and Rachael Ackley are writing a book about Shelby County barns.
Join us for this interesting information, see some friends and neighbors, and stay for refreshments to talk and see our displays.

Our free local museum will be open 1-4 on Sundays 8/16 and 9/13, so come to 2616 N Sand Creek Road in Boggstown and see what we have.

FROM Fairland Historical Society: Tamara Hemmerlein Presents: Indiana Through the Mapmaker's Eye.

Join us on Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. to learn how maps have been used through the years as documentation, tools, political images, and art.

We'll take a look at some of the images from the past 300 years in the Indiana Historical Society's online collections.

This event is free and open to the public.

Location: Moral Township Government Center, 8333 N Frontage Rd, Fairland.

TODAY 7-13-2026!
Anne Hardwick with the Fairland Historical Society will lead free Fairland Walking Tours on July 13 at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Meet under the shelter at the Fairland Community Park, 209 Commercial St, Fairland, Indiana to visit, enjoy some refreshments, and join one of the tours. Wear your walking shoes! (This is an outdoor event; watch for updates in case of stormy weather.)

BOGGSTOWN MUSEUM OPEN JULY 26 1-4

1. On June 7th we showed a photo of the March 15, 2026 storm after it blew down the Red Mills Scales Building. This is the other photo we have by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, of the damage BEFORE the county brought equipment to move it off the road.

2. The Joseph Boggs Society's free local MUSEUM will be open 1-4pm on Sunday July 26th, to learn about the history of Boggstown and Sugar Creek Township.
Our displays include Boggstown High School, Red Mill, Boggstown Cabaret, local "Ma Kettle" actress Marjorie Main, Boggstown Resolutions to secede from the Union, Whetzel's Trace to open our area to settlers, Assessors books from 1858 to 1921 to see who owned property, and famous Civil War Major General Ambrose Burnside (sideburns were named for him) and our railroad, which he owned and extended in 1866 from Franklin to Boggstown and to Fairland.
You will be surprised how much we have about our local history.

3. Our August 19th 7pm Quarterly Meeting program will be by Greg Weaver from Hendricks Township, who retired this year as a political journalist at the Indianapolis Business Journal after earlier at the Indianapolis Star. He will talk about the shrinking impact of Indiana’s mainstream media and the impact on government and politics. He’ll also solicit ideas on the most interesting and significant barns in the county, as he and Rachael Ackley are writing a book about Shelby County barns. His father Lewis Weaver attended school at Boggstown until graduating from the new Southwestern High School in 1959. Put it on your calendar to join us for the program, see friends and neighbors, and refreshments​ when you can talk with others and see our displays.

4. Our 2027 membership form is on our Facebook.com/Boggstown if you would like to join, rejoin, or share it with others.

5. We're working on our 2027 local history calendar, and it gets harder to find good photos, so PLEASE check your family photos for local people, places, and things that might be good for our calendar and museum. We have sold a calendar since 1999, so that's 28 years times 12 months for 336 photos!

Come celebrate the Franklin Township Historical Society's 50th anniversary on July 11th, from 11 to 3! 😃

Events will be at 6510 S. Franklin Rd, but please park in the south portion of The Creek's lot next door in order to leave our gravel lot available for those with limited mobility.

Sunrise over Boggstown on our 250th Independence Day!

HAPPY 250th BIRTHDAY to our UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

1. This photo is of Joseph Boggs Society President Ken Gardner and member Tom Plymate, on June 13, 2026, when Tom's Nail-Ray Family visited four cemeteries to place a wreath on the grave of Revolutionary War Veterans, including William Daniel's shown here at left, who is the only known to be buried in our Sugar Creek Township, in Sandhill Cemetery on 600W and south of 100N.

2. Our Joseph Boggs Society volunteers restored this large pioneer cemetery in 2023 to 2025, and we are almost finished restoring the last of our seven township pioneer cemeteries.

3. Here is information we have about William Daniel.
3a. William Daniel (1760-1855) was born in Orange County, Virginia to James and Mary (Killingham) Daniel.
3b. In 1785, William married Mary Pollard “Molly” Gaines (1761-1850) in Virginia, and she is buried to the right of him. They had six children and their son John Marshall Daniel married Nancy Boggess, sister of Evalina Boggess, the wife of Joseph Boggs, who Boggstown was named for in 1867 as was our Joseph Boggs Society in 1997.
3c. In his 1834 Pension Application, William stated that while residing in Orange County, Virginia, he served 4 times during the revolution, as follows:
3c1. Enlisted May 1778, served 3 months under Captain Garland Burnley, Colonel Francis Taylor’s regiment. A letter written by W. A. Crosby says William, when about 18, was one of the aides to General George Washington at Valley Forge, which was from December 1777 to June 1778.
3c2. Spring of 1779, served 3 months under Captain Richard Graves.
3c3. Summer of 1780, served 3 months with Lieutenant William Thomas as substitute for John Daniel, a relative.
3c4. Summer of 1781, served 3 months under Captain Richard Webb.
