Joseph Boggs Society for Historical Preservation Historical Society to preserve and promote the history of Boggstown and Sugar Creek Township of Shelby County, Indiana. Click on "About" for more information. 1.

This is our only internet site for everyone to share information. The Joseph Boggs Society for Historical Preservation, Inc. also goes by other informal names of Joseph Boggs Society, Boggs Society, JBS, Boggstown Historical Society, and Boggstown Museum. Look to us for Boggstown history.

2. Our meeting house is in an 1887 Seventh-day Adventist Church building at 2616 N Sand Creek Road Boggstown,

IN 46110-9752, on the internet at Facebook.com/Boggstown, and contact us at [email protected].

3. Our free Quarterly Meetings are open to the public, and include a short business meeting, a program usually about history, and ending with refreshments while we talk with others and look at our museum displays. The 2026 Quarterly Meetings are:
a. February 22, 2026 - Sunday 2pm
b. May 20, 2026 - Wednesday 7pm
c. August 19, 2026 - Wednesday 7pm
d. November 18, 2026 - Wednesday 7pm

4. Our free local history museum is open during quarterly meetings and other events, about once a month as posted on Facebook, and upon request. Allow 1 to 2 hours to see displays that include Boggstown High School, the Red Mill, local "Ma Kettle" actress Marjorie Main, the Boggstown Resolutions to secede from the Union, Whetzel's Trace for settlers, pioneer cemeteries we have restored, Civil War Union Major General Ambrose Burnside and our railroad he owned, and Assessors books from 1858 to 1921 to see who owned property. You will be surprised by our history.

5. We have memberships to support our mission and volunteer for offices and functions. 2026 membership dues are $15 for an individual and $25 for a family.

6. Since 1999 we have created and sold local history $10 calendars, to raise funds and promote our history. We also have older $5 calendars to complete your collection.

7. We are an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and welcome donations for our operations, our endowment fund, and for specific projects.

We are saddened by the passing of Marlene Welty​ on June 9, 2026. She and Richard Welty were local farmers and long time members of the Joseph Boggs Society.

Lois Marlene Welty died peacefully on June 9, 2026.
She was a life-long resident of Clark Township.
She was born July 16, 1937, to Russell Lowell "Cotton" Dougherty and Helen Christene Henry Dougherty. They preceded her in death, as well as two brothers, Calvin and Henry; nephew, Jeff Dougherty; daughter-in-law, Sara Robards; and stepsons, David and Todd Welty.
Marlene was a 1955 graduate of Clark School and earned an associate's degree from Indiana Business College.
She was a member of Rocklane Christian Church for 76 years, serving in many capacities, including Sunday school secretary, teacher, and in Women's and Membership Ministries.
She was a member of the Johnson County Homemakers, the Jolly 12 Euchre Club, and Secretary/Treasurer of Rocklane Cemetery for 20 years.
She was employed in both insurance and banking.
She was a Certified Master Gardener, and her passion was her flowers and gardening.
She enjoyed sewing and helping her daughters and granddaughters with 4-H sewing projects.
She was an avid fan of basketball, especially the Purdue Boilermakers.
Marlene was married to John Robards for 20 years.
She was then married to Richard Welty for 34 years until his death in 2020.
She is survived by her children, Lori Robards Bowman, New Whiteland; Greg (Cathy) Robards, Greenwood; Gary (Marla) Robards, Indianapolis; and Beth (Tom) Tharpe, Trafalgar.
Also surviving is a stepson, Keith (Val) Welty, Missouri; two step-daughters-in-law, Shelle Welty of California and Tracey Welty of Bargersville.
Marlene is also survived by her brother, Mike (Fran) Dougherty of Bedford.
She was very blessed in this life with 20 grandchildren (10 boys and 10 girls), 12 great-grandchildren, three nieces, and many cousins.
Those wishing to pay respects may do so at Rocklane Christian Church on Sunday, June 14th from 4:00-7:00 PM and Monday from 10:00-11:00 AM.
A service will be conducted at the Church on Monday, June 15th at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Rocklane Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Rocklane Church Building Fund, 4430 Rocklane Rd, Greenwood, IN 46143.
Arrangements entrusted to ​Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel.

BOGGSTOWN MUSEUM OPEN JUNE 14 1-4

1. You have probably seen damage from the March 15, 2026 storm that blew down the Red Mills Scales Building. This is a photo taken by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, of the damage BEFORE the county brought equipment to move it off the road.

2. The Joseph Boggs Society's free local MUSEUM will be open 1-4pm on Sunday June 14th, to learn about the history of Boggstown and Sugar Creek Township.
Our displays include Boggstown High School, Red Mill, Boggstown Cabaret, local "Ma Kettle" actress Marjorie Main, Boggstown Resolutions to secede from the Union, Whetzel's Trace to open our area to settlers, Assessors books from 1858 to 1921 to see who owned property, and famous Civil War Major General Ambrose Burnside (sideburns were named for him) and our railroad, which he owned and extended in 1866 from Franklin to Boggstown and to Fairland.
You will be surprised how much we have about our local history.

BOGGSTOWN PARK FLOOD - JUNE 7, 2008
As with the Blizzard of '78, our community will long remember the floods of 2008. June was rainy with 5" on the 4th, and another 6" early on the 7th, showing here the resulting rare flood of the Boggstown Park. The water came from the east across Boggstown Road, through the park and its south side, across a yard, and into the Joseph Boggs Society yard. Both rainy days flooded the crawlspace of the Boggs Society meeting house, and we had to replace the damaged duct work.
The flooding in the park forced the postponement of that day's Boggstown Park Sale held by the Sugar Creek Garden Club. We decided to combine it with our annual Boggstown Park Concert on June 28th.

The May 20, 2026 Joseph Boggs Society quarterly meeting program was by Marcia Gascho, about the 100 Years of Route 66. She showed photos of its history and years of traveling the Mother Road with her husband Bruce. There are festivals all along the route this year to celebrate its history.

CARLOS AND CAROLYN GRAY'S FLY-IN - AUGUST 14, 1983

Carlos and Carolyn Gray hosted two fly-ins at their home just north of Boggstown. At this second event were several ultra-lights, two bi-planes, other two and four seat airplanes, and even a hot-air balloon. Hours of food, fun, and fellowship centered around a love of flying.

Local pilots attending included Carlos Gray, Zarrell Gray, Ed Shaw, Tim Shaw, George Gardner, Harold Weaver, Carroll Craig, and Bill Gray. Ray Ives owned one of the bi-planes and was a cousin of actor Burl Ives. He stopped at the Shelbyville Airport on his way home to New York and asked for a place to eat, so they suggested flying to Carlos' and join the fun, and he even stayed the night with Carroll and Evelyn Craig.

1. The next free Joseph Boggs Society quarterly meeting is Wednesday May 20th at 7pm at 2616 N Sand Creek Road in Boggstown. After a short business meeting, the program will be about the 100 years of Route 66, by a couple who have travelled it for years. Please join us for what should be a fun evening, see your friends and neighbors, our local history displays, and some refreshments.
