What happens when you combine wild places, serious photography, remote mountain landscapes, and a spirit of adventure?

From the remote South Enylcheck Glacier Base Cam to the towering peaks of the Tien Shan, including Khan Tengri, the northernmost 7,000+ metre peak on Earth, this is an expedition for photographers who want to go far beyond the ordinary.

I always like to see this Neon sign in Merced. It speaks to older more simple times, but the message is clear. U SAVE Yosemite. There have always been threats, which is why the park was formed. But the encroachments on our public lands are ever increasing and this latest proposed land swap deal stinks. Write your representatives.
No land swap. No new roads to let a fancy resort have exclusive entrance to the park. Hell no.

Photographers: this is more than just another workshop. It’s a return to where a photographic legacy began.

Nestled in California’s Owens Valley between the soaring Sierra Nevada and the ancient White Mountains, Bishop sits at the heart of one of North America’s great landscape photography destinations. In autumn, golden aspen groves glow against granite peaks, alpine lakes, deep blue skies and dramatic weather creating an extraordinary canvas for photographers.

This is also where Visionary Wild has deep roots.

It was here that founder Justin Black developed his first photography workshop program while serving as General Manager and Curator of Galen Rowell’s Mountain Light Gallery.

Now Justin returns to this remarkable landscape alongside Jerry Dodrill, an award-winning professional photographer and highly regarded teacher of more than two decades and a protégé of the legendary Galen Rowell.

Together, Justin and Jerry bring an intimate knowledge of the Eastside: its landscapes, weather, light and the fleeting opportunities that can transform a good photograph into an exceptional one.

Over five days, you’ll experience eight pre-dawn and sunset field sessions, exploring the Owens Valley, Eastern Sierra Nevada and White Mountains. You’ll photograph carefully selected locations while learning to respond to changing light and weather with greater confidence and intention.

From July 17-19, 2026 we flew our group of photographers up to the mountaineering basecamp on Kyrgyzstan’s South Inylchek Glacier to photograph Khan Tengri, and Peak Pobeda, the world’s northernmost 7000m summits. The 45 minute flight through mountain passes and up the long glacier in an open air Russian Mi-8 helicopter is pretty exciting and always a highlight at the end of our 17-day expedition around the country. These are a few clips and stills that I put together to share a sense of the experience.

Deconstructing mountains...

Each mountain range has its own unique visual characteristics which are defined by the specific geologic, glacial, and environmental factors that build and erode the planets high places. Gravity pulls material downward in a never ceasing flow toward the sea. Bound by the same forces of nature, shape forms repeat themselves despite vast differences of location, scale and time.
These examples of were made during our visit to Kyrgyzstan’s South Inylchek Glacier last month as the finale to our expedition of the Tien Shan Mountains. Getting here requires either a week long trek, or a 45 minute helicopter ride which offers spectacular views through open windows. Once situated in the seasonal mountaineering basecamp at 13,400’, we have a couple days to soak in the alpine views, go for hikes, rest, explore, and photograph the icy landscape in the shadow of massive peaks rising over 24,000 feet.
