Boalsburg Heritage Museum

Boalsburg Heritage Museum The purpose of the museum has been to promote awareness of Harris Township’s rich heritage and to interest and educate the public.

The Boalsburg Heritage Museum originated in 1982 as a permanent place for many historical artifacts that people of Harris Township, as well as the Township itself, believed should be kept for history. It is in the 1825-built home of the late Sara Sweet. Exhibits, lectures, and social events have been an important part of this effort. From the onset, classes of elementary school children have made f

ields trips to tour the museum and often the blacksmith shop and other village attractions as well. Other groups frequently request tours as part of their visit to the area. Most rooms in the house are set up as semi-permanent exhibits with the gallery reserved for displays of shorter duration. The gallery has been the locale for many interesting and varied displays. Often they have spilled over in the parlor and dining room areas. Exhibits have been by local artists, craftspeople, photographers, hobbyists, guilds, and collectors. Many have been of historical importance. Over the years, many gifts have been donated to the museum. These gifts have added to the collection of historical and community artifacts for exhibition.

We asked a Board member what were her favorite quotes from Cathy Horner's new book, Growing Up in Boalsburg: Voices of the 1950's. Here's what she chose:

"I remember Dr Light making house calls. He took trade often for payment. He would take quince apples off our tree for payment."

"Everyone had dog houses back then, no one kept their dogs indoors. One Halloween, the kids switched all the dogs in their dog houses. People woke up and they had someone else's dog in their yard. It was harmless and funny."
-Becky McKinstry

"I remember one Halloween; we only had one rubber mask among our gang. We kept switching the mask and taking turns so we could get popcorn balls from Mrs. Duffy."
-Dick Lassman

Don't forget to join us at the museum for a book signing by Cathy on Sunday, August 30, 2026 from 1-3pm.
