Today is National Dog Day! Dogs have long had their place in the military as pets, mascots, and working dogs. In WWII, the military first recruited dogs to train them for specific jobs, they then served in combat alongside their handlers. Eri, a Doberman Pinscher, was donated to the U.S. Marine Corps by Mrs. Rhys Carpenter of Downingtown, PA. Eri would serve with the 1st Marine War Dog Platoon during the Battles of Bougainville, 1943, and Okinawa, 1945. On February 19, 1946, Eri was returned to Mrs. Carpenter in Pennsylvania.

Living historians from the Pennsylvania Military Museum traveled to Bedford Springs Resort August 15-16 to take part in their Vintage Weekend! During World War II, the resort served as a U.S. Navy training school for radio operators, earning the nickname “Mountain Navy.” Our living historians shared stories about life at Bedford Springs during the war, the Navy’s use of the facility, and the important role played by the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in supporting naval operations.

In August, 1918, Pennsylvania's 28th Division engaged in a desperate battle in the town of Fismes, France. Fismes is divided in half by the Vesle River, with a small bridge connecting the two halves of the town. During the desperate, hand-to-hand fighting that resulted in so many American lives lost, that bridge was the only life line for the soldiers who fought for their lives during the battle. Today, in the beautiful town of Fismes, stands a recreation of the bridge. It is a monument to the Pennsylvanians of the 28th Infantry Division who lost their lives there during the First World War.

On land, the War of 1812 was largely a disappointment for the United States, with the army and militia suffering many defeats. However, at sea the United States Navy and Marines roughly handled the Royal Navy, winning stunning victories. On August 19, 1812 the USS Constitution sighted and closed with the HMS Guerriere. During the battle, cannon balls bounced off the thick oak sides of the Constitution, with men exclaiming "Her sides are made of iron!" The Guerriere's Captain struck her flag and surrendered, with the ship scuttled the next day. It was the first in a long line of victories for the United States on the water.
