This afternoon our area experienced a 3.9 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter 1.9 miles west of Cooter, Mo. So what is an epicenter?

An epicenter is the point on the Earth’s surface directly above where the earthquake begins underground.

The focus (also called the hypocenter) is the exact point inside the Earth where the earthquake starts. In this case, that point was about 7.5 miles below the surface.

Seismic waves are the energy waves released by the earthquake that travel outward and cause the ground to shake. This is the part we feel during an earthquake. 🫨

✈️ Did you know?

The Civil Air Patrol’s 120th Composite Squadron is officially back in Blytheville and now operating from the Arkansas Aeroplex.

The squadron supports aerospace education, cadet leadership programs and community-based search and rescue efforts across Northeast Arkansas.

As Incoming commander Capt. Andrea Street told Region 8 News, “The total historical aspect is pretty amazing. And then to come back here to Eaker Air Force Base and Blytheville Army Airfield is quite significant. It’s actually pretty amazing that we’re getting to come back here.”

Meet Barrett Harrison, a lifelong Blytheville native and vice chairman of the National Cold War Center’s Board of Directors!

As manager of the Arkansas Aeroplex — located on the site of the former Eaker Air Force Base — Harrison has helped transform the area into a thriving hub of economic development for the state.

We’re grateful for his dedication to both the Blytheville community and the vision for the future National Cold War Center.
