A major piece of American history is ready to be experienced in person.

The Sultana Disaster Museum officially opens on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Marion, Arkansas, telling the powerful story of the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history. From loss to legacy, this long-awaited opening honors the past while educating future generations through immersive exhibits and storytelling.

As a reminder, the current museum located at 104 Washington Street is now CLOSED as we prepare for the opening of our new museum facility.

We look forward to welcoming you this November!

Meet Dr. Christian F. Ostermann, Executive Director of the National Cold War Center and one of the world’s leading experts on Cold War history!

An award-winning historian and founding director of the History and Public Policy Program at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ostermann has spent decades studying the global impact of the Cold War.

“The ideological and geopolitical battle between capitalism and communism defined our global politics for almost half a century, resulting in a nuclear arms race, regional wars and cultural and technological changes that remain vital here in the 21st century,” he said. “Our vision is for a state-of-the-art museum that tells the story of the Cold War as lived history and connects with younger generations.”

We’re grateful for Dr. Ostermann’s leadership and expertise as he helps guide the vision for the National Cold War Center.

We love seeing museum leaders team up to keep history alive! Jacksonville Military Museum Director Elizabeth Anderson recently caught up with David Collins, curator of the incredible new exhibit, "Manufacturing Victory in Arkansas," currently on display at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History.
This fascinating exhibit dives deep into the home front efforts that shaped the war, specifically examining the six critical WWII ordnance plants that operated right here in our state:

This afternoon our area experienced a 3.9 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter 1.9 miles west of Cooter, Mo. So what is an epicenter?

An epicenter is the point on the Earth’s surface directly above where the earthquake begins underground.

The focus (also called the hypocenter) is the exact point inside the Earth where the earthquake starts. In this case, that point was about 7.5 miles below the surface.

Seismic waves are the energy waves released by the earthquake that travel outward and cause the ground to shake. This is the part we feel during an earthquake. 🫨
