Next Thursday, October 29, from 5-7 p.m., join BRAHM and The Speckled Trout as we learn about BRAHM's latest exhibition, "Honoring Nature: Early Southern Appalachian Painting" through art activities for youth and adults.

BRAHM staff will lead a design-your-own museum project that explores BRAHM's Permanent Collection, while Speckled Trout pros will assist with fly tying in the BRAHM Alexander Community Gallery, all while enjoying seasonal bites from the Speckled Trout. Join us this Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m. with Mark Nystrom for an artist talk where he explores his artistic process and provides a behind-the-scenes look at how he got into working with wind.

The wind is Mark Nystrom’s muse, and the play of light on swiftly moving water fascinates him. The ebbs and flows of natural forces have inspired works of art and design since he attended graduate school in the mid-2000s.

"Field Studies: Ways of Knowing Place in Southern Appalachia" is open through January 9, 2027, here at BRAHM.

The exhibition brings together contemporary artists whose work grows out of sustained attention to the landscapes, materials, histories, and lived environments of Southern Appalachia. Through practices spanning film, sound, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, and installation, the artists in this exhibition engage modes of field study and observation associated with the natural sciences, historical records, and archives.

Join us this Thursday, October 15 from 6-7 for an artist talk and live demonstration with Betty Maney. Maney will share stories about her life and artistic practice. She will take the audience through her creative process and the material she uses.

A white oak and river cane basket weaver, bead worker, and potter, Betty Maney can often be found at her Cherokee, North Carolina home studio cutting and dyeing the oak strips to weave one of her exquisite baskets. That’s when she’s not working out a new design for her latest beaded creation or hand-building her traditional Cherokee stamped pottery pieces. A member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), Betty’s one-of-a-kind contemporary, cultural art pieces are heavily influenced by traditional techniques and materials handed down with each generation.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

While BRAHM is closed to the public on Monday, plan to come to the Museum this week and experience "ᏔᎷᏥ ᏕᎬᏍᎬ ᎣᎩᎲᎢ Weaving our Heritage: Cherokee Baskets" with artist-in-residence Betty Maney. Maney will be in Schaefer Gallery Tuesday and Thursday from 12 - 2 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Thursday evening from 6 - 7 p.m., Maney will also be giving an artist talk and live demonstration. This residency and program is made possible through the generosity of the Bryant & Nancy Hanley Foundation. Take time for yourself with a special series we are calling Lunch & Learn: A Slow Art Experience. The next installment is this Saturday, October 10, at 12:00 p.m.

What is Slow Art? Most of us stroll through an art gallery, pausing at a piece of art for a few moments before moving on to the next, like some form of visual buffet. Slow Art as a concept was created to encourage us all to stay with the art for a little longer, savor it, and soak it in. The hope is that we not only see more, but also get to know the works in greater detail. Exploring artworks more slowly can help us to form more stories, feelings, and opinions about the works.

Join us on your mat this Saturday, October 10, at 10 A.M. to explore elements of current works on exhibit as we move through an all-levels yoga class. We'll meet in the gallery and explore one of our current exhibitions through movement, slow looking, and meditation.

Classes are led by BRAHM Docent Volunteer and certified yoga teacher Suzie Taylor. Please bring your own mat and reserve your spot by 5 p.m. on Friday at blowingrockmuseum.org/calendar!
