This Mother’s Day, let us read the words of Mary Eliza Perine Tucker Lambert. A respected Alabama poet and author of the late 19th century, Lambert is remembered for her emotional poem “I Am Weary, Mother,” a reflection on love and longing. Tragically, Lambert never truly knew her mother, Mary Eliza Perine, who died shortly after giving birth to her.

That story carries a deeply personal connection to Old Cahawba Archaeological Park. Mary Eliza Perine is buried here near the site of the Statehouse Pavilion, near the location of the first home of Mr. Edward Martineau Perine. Today, she rests there alone, creating a quiet but powerful reminder of the families who once called Cahawba home.

We invite you to bring your mother, grandmother, children, or loved ones to Old Cahawba Archaeological Park to spend time together among the beauty and history of the park. Walk the shaded roads, explore the stories of those who once lived here, and take a moment to reflect on the mothers of Cahawba — the women whose love, strength, and sacrifices helped shape this community and whose stories still echo through the landscape today. The park is open 9:00am to 5:00pm while the Visitor Center is open 10:00am-4:30pm.
