Panhandle Pioneer Settlement

Panhandle Pioneer Settlement To acquire, document, research and restore buildings, furnishings and tools that were used in daily New pieces of history are added every year!

The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement was founded in July 1989 to bring together the material history of life in Calhoun County and the Florida Panhandle between the 1820s and the 1940s. Back then, Blountstown was a bustling community that relied heavily on commerce carried along the Apalachicola River, also known as the "Big River." Today, the Settlement has 18 buildings of historical significance, as well as exhibits and collections.

The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement will be open for field trips on the days listed. Arrival Time begins at 9:00 and starts winding down around Noon Time. This schedule is part of the effort to best utilize our volunteers and to help you plan for the year! Various artisans will offer demonstrations and we are continuing to develop new activities for the children which will be made available as time permits. Should you need an alternate date, contact our office for availability.

Students will have a chance to sit in the two-room schoolhouse, view the vegetable garden, visit the family cabins, grind corn and feed the chickens, see the blacksmith at work, compare tools of yesterday with those of today, taste homemade biscuits cooked in an old-tyme wood burning stove, tour the Dr.'s office, hear about the community experience during a hog killing, and visit the general store, where purchases can be made.
