Rex created for 4 decades. Before the gallery on Penn Avenue, there was Butler Square.

Over more than 40 years, Rex Mhiripiri’s gallery lived at several Twin Cities addresses: Butler Square in downtown Minneapolis, Nicollet Mall, 70th and France, and for the past 20 years, 90th and Penn in Bloomington.

The addresses changed. The purpose didn’t. At every one of them, Rex shared his own paintings and the stone sculpture of Zimbabwe with anyone who walked in.

Born in 1935 in rural Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Rex walked miles to school as a boy and came to the United States in 1966. He believed that faith, discipline, and education could change the direction of a life. The gallery was one of the ways he passed that belief on.

Maybe you are just hearing about Mhiripiri Gallery, or maybe you couldn’t make it in September; we are here!

The afternoon we held in Rex’s honor reminded us how much this space means to people. It also reminded us that a gallery isn’t meant for one day a year. It’s meant for an ordinary Thursday, a slow Saturday, a gathering with friends, or a lunch break when you need somewhere to think.

Someone is here most days.

To everyone who came through our doors this past weekend: thank you.

Family, friends, longtime collectors, and neighbors filled the gallery with conversation, laughter, and so many stories. Some of you knew Rex for decades. Some of you were meeting his work for the first time. Every one of you made the space feel exactly the way he hoped it always would, full of people coming together around the art.

We heard memories we had never heard before. We saw faces we hadn't seen in years. We were reminded again and again how many lives Rex touched through this gallery and through the artists he championed.

The response was more than our family could have imagined, and it has meant more than we can say. Thank you for sharing your time, your memories, and your love with us.

The gallery is here, and our doors remain open. We hope to see you again soon.

Today is the day.

The gallery is open from 11am to 4pm for an afternoon in honor of Rex Mhiripiri and the art he brought from Zimbabwe to Minnesota. Shona stone sculpture, Rex's original paintings, and the family are all here to welcome you.

Come take your time with the work, as Rex always intended: in person, unhurried, and shared with others. Bring someone who has never seen it.

This is a free event, and we'll serve light food and beverages. We would love to see you.

Look at this face.

Carved by the Zimbabwean sculptor Charles Mapoyi, this portrait bust is worked in verdite, a semiprecious stone prized for its deep green color and its rarity. Verdite is one of the hardest and most treasured stones a Shona sculptor can choose, and it forgives mistakes. Every line in this face- the brow, the set of the mouth, the texture of the hair- was cut by hand.

At 15 inches tall and 33 pounds, this piece has real presence. It holds a room.

It will be on display Saturday, September 26, when we open the gallery for an afternoon in honor of Rex Mhiripiri. Come stand in front of it.

One path, three seasons.

Rex Mhiripiri painted Seasons Three as a single view carried across the year: the same tree-lined trail in the green of spring, the gold and fire of autumn, and the deep quiet of winter snow. Read left to right, it is the passage of time in one frame.

Rex was a painter long before he was a gallery owner, and works like this show why. The brushwork is loose and alive, the light shifting from panel to panel.

This original acrylic will be on the wall Saturday, September 26, at our afternoon honoring Rex. See it in person, the scale and the color do not come through on a screen.

A red barn under a winter sky.

For a man born in the warmth of Zimbabwe, Rex Mhiripiri painted Minnesota winters with real tenderness. Old Farm, signed in 2024, captures a snowed-in farmstead: the barn, the silo, and a pink-streaked sky at the end of a cold day. It is a Minnesota scene through the eyes of an artist who spent his life moving between two worlds and loved them both.

This original acrylic is available at the gallery, and you can see it Saturday, September 26, at our afternoon in Rex's honor.
