Most people have never held a piece of verdite.

It is semi-precious, predominantly green, found in limited deposits, and rarely used in sculpture because of how difficult it is to work. When a Zimbabwean artist chooses verdite, the stone itself is part of the statement.

This elephant is 7.25 inches long. Small enough to sit on a desk. Significant enough to anchor a room.

Listed at $375. Mention this post and it is yours for $275.

What you are missing when you only see art through photographs and online.

The weight of it. The temperature of the stone in your hands. The way the surface shifts from matte to almost luminous, depending on where the light hits.

Shona sculptors work in stone that formed two and a half billion years ago. Serpentine. Springstone. Verdite. Each one pulls light differently. Each one has a density that photographs flatten into nothing.

The people who collect this work will tell you the same thing: you have to be in the room with it.

Rex Mhiripiri was a painter, a collector, a traveler, and a man who believed that art could introduce strangers to each other across every distance that usually keeps people apart.

He was also a father.

He built this gallery over 40 years and left behind something his children are still tending, not because they have to, but because they understand what he built and what it meant.

To all the fathers and the ones who build things that outlast them:

Happy Father's Day.

Pieces from Mhiripiri Gallery now live in homes and collections far beyond Minnesota.

Over the decades, Rex Mhiripiri helped place Zimbabwean sculpture into collections across the United States and internationally.

What makes that meaningful is not just where the pieces traveled, but the artists, relationships, and stories that traveled with them.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

At Mhiripiri Gallery, we are honored to share the work of Zimbabwean artists whose creativity, skill, and cultural traditions continue to inspire collectors and visitors around the world.

Art has the power to preserve stories, celebrate identity, and connect people across cultures and generations. Today, we reflect on that power and the importance of ensuring that diverse voices, histories, and artistic traditions continue to be seen, valued, and remembered.

What draws you into a sculpture first?

The shape? The movement? The emotion? Or the texture of the stone itself?

Some collectors are immediately drawn to highly polished surfaces.

Others love rough, natural textures that still show the character of the original stone.

There is never one right answer.

One of the things that makes Shona sculpture so compelling is the balance between realism and abstraction.

This hand-carved giraffe transforms the familiar shape of the animal into flowing lines, movement, and pattern.

Depending on the angle, the piece feels playful, elegant, or completely modern.

A sculpture that changes every time you walk past it.

The giraffe measures 6 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 1 1/2 inches deep. Listed at $45.

Available through Mhiripiri Gallery.

Some corners of the gallery feel almost meditative.

Quiet stone. Warm wood. Soft light moving across carved surfaces.

The kind of place where people unintentionally slow down and spend more time than they planned.

Rex Mhiripiri once described his gallery this way:

"Here, Zimbabwe art works speak to Americans without me saying a thing. These strangers meet in our gallery. The cold stone works are their common language, warm, friendly, even loving and embracing, saying: Shake hands."

Forty years later, the work is still doing what he built it to do.

Come stand in front of a piece and find out what it has to say to you.

The first piece is usually the hardest one to choose.

After that, something interesting happens. The space you put it in starts to suggest the next piece. A sculpture on the entry table invites a painting on the wall above it. A small carved figure on a bookshelf asks for a companion. The collection grows in conversation with itself, one piece at a time.

There is no rush. Most of the collections we love most were built slowly, one visit at a time.

Whether you are starting your first piece or adding your fifth, we would love to help you find what comes next.
