Today is the day! Are you ready to Give to the Max?

The Bloomington Historical Society relies on generous donors to provide high quality programming and exhibits at the Old Town Hall as well as the Bloomington Civic Plaza. The exhibits and our extensive archives are supported and maintained, in part, through donations received through GiveMN. This year, the BHS is seeking donations that will support the purchase of an archival management software system. This software system, Collective Access, will allow the BHS to drastically improve its ability to share archival materials with researchers, family historians, and anyone interested in learning more about Bloomington's history.

Please consider donating today for Give to the Max Day on November 18th. Donations can be made by following this link: https://www.givemn.org/organization/Bloomington-Mn-Historical-Society

The September historical society display at Civic Plaza remembers the 20th Anniversary of the attacks on 9/11. Bloomington Jefferson graduate Thomas Burnett Jr. was killed in the United Flight 93 crash that day. Most of these artifacts, from our extensive Burnett collection, are not typically on display to the public.

A Civil War Monument to those Bloomington soldiers who served in Company B of the First Minnesota volunteers stands in the center of the Bloomington cemetery. It was erected by the citizens of Bloomington "in honor and memory of our country's defenders 1861-1865." It was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1890, which was called Decoration Day at that time. There were 55 volunteers from Bloomington who enlisted and fought in the Civil War. Stop by this weekend, pause a moment to read their names, and reflect on the sacrifice of Bloomington men and women who have given their lives in service to our nation.

The Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, May 13-23, 2021, will include a short documentary film by John Haley titled "Old Met." We were happy to help with the research for the film by providing photos, documents and news clippings for this enthusiastic young filmmaker. You can find a preview on the event website. You may remember the #GiveAtHomeMN campaign last year – an eight day fundraising event that helped
nonprofits like us generate revenue to help sustain our programs through the beginning of the pandemic.

This year, we are participating in the second iteration of that event – named SpringForwardMN!

There are a couple of key areas in which we need your help:

1. Make a donation to the Bloomington Historical Society – here’s the link to our GiveMN page:
www.givemn.org/organization/Bloomington-Mn-Historical-Society

2. Share our page with your network on social media while posting about the work of The Bloomington Historical Society. Encourage your friends and family to donate!

3. Volunteer! Help our team with discovering, preserving, and disseminating Bloomington history.

Thank you in advance for your generous support during #SpringForwardMN!

Our community mourns the sudden death of Jefferson High School hockey coach Mike Ryan. In his honor we share this hockey stick from our museum collection. It was donated by Mike Indre, Bloomington High School hockey team of 1961. They were the first Bloomington team to earn a spot in the Minnesota State hockey tournament.

Do you enjoy taking photos? We're looking for some volunteers to take snapshots around the City of Bloomington so we can document what things look like in 2021. This is a great time to take streetscape photos - after the snow and before the trees fill out. Yes, there is Google, but BHS would like to own the copyright to the photos so we can use them freely in the future. We're looking to document major intersections, businesses, places of worship, schools, and houses 100 years or older. Send us an email and get your camera out! [email protected]

At BHS we've been working hard to sort and file nearly 100 boxes of mixed documents found in our basement storage area. The next step is to file the documents we have saved into our file cabinets. Three recycle bins full of unneeded extra copies and badly damaged documents were discarded. It has taken six volunteers over six months to get the project to this point. Quite an accomplishment! Sadly, the box in the lower left was full of documents and not refreshments for our team.

What a wonderful concert of Swedish music at the Bloomington Historical society this afternoon. The musicians, two from Sweden, were outstanding. If you wish to hear these musicians and many more Nisswa's event is coming up next weekend.
Who else remembers this cook book? I'm still making wonderful dishes from its pages today.
Do any old-timers in Bloomington remember the Minneapolis Auto Club that was a destination for a lovely white table-cloth dinner in the late 1930's to the mid 1950's? I worked there one summer; it was a beautiful place to work. I'd love to see some photos, if anyone has them! (And if you have them, you could donate them to the Bloomington Historical Society.)
Does the family have photos/docs other items that could be donated to the Bloomington historical society?
