Of the 12 portraits I painted for these covers, Frederick Douglass is my favorite.
He understood the power of imagery, and became the most photographed person of the 19th century. He distributed his image with his writing to humanize the struggle for equal rights, and to challenge the racist stereotypes prevalent at that time.
