A sad farewell to one of the original crew at Salmon Ruins!

It is with great sadness that the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research shares the passing of Rex Adams, retired LTRR Senior Research Specialist, on Saturday, June 27, 2026. He passed peacefully with his family by his side in Tucson.

Rex was a treasured colleague, mentor, and friend to many in the dendrochronology community. In 2016, he received the Harold C. Fritts Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dendrochronology. This honor recognizes individuals who have significantly influenced the field through innovative research, advancement of the tree-ring sciences, and collaboration across disciplines.

Rex’s family invites friends and colleagues to share photos, videos, and stories celebrating his life. Materials may be uploaded to the Box folder: https://arizona.app.box.com/f/3b3908dcc9f0408a914d091629619106 or emailed to [email protected].

The family will hold a private memorial service, followed by a reception open to all who knew Rex. The reception will take place on Saturday, October 24, at noon at ERN2 on the University of Arizona campus. Please note that campus parking will be limited due to Homecoming festivities.

We extend our deepest condolences to Rex’s family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

The impending border wall construction in Texas threatens to mar or destroy an untold number of millennia-old rock art murals that stand in the coming wall’s path

It would run straight through the Seminole Canyon State Park, which is home to 27 murals, including the Fate Bell Shelter which was drawn perhaps 4,000 years ago (pictured here).

From The Athletic: In just 59 words, Shiyazh Pete, an undrafted rookie on the Dallas Cowboys, spoke from his heart after he became the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team. "This game, this star, this team, will make us brothers."

If you're unfamiliar with the Roadless Rule...

"In an announcement earlier this summer, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins claimed that the Trump administration planned to repeal the Roadless Rule in order to increase timber production and reduce wildfire risk in national forests. But research has shown that increasing the amount of roads in forests actually increases wildfire risk." 🔥🔥🔥

"Across state lines and party lines, Americans spoke with one voice to tell President Trump to stop this attack on America’s forests."
