Black Earth Children's Museum Inspire youth and families to discover more about themselves, their communities and their world through interactive learning.

One of the only "small-town" children's museums in the nation, the Black Earth Children's Museum (BECM) is a unique and enriching place that inspires discovery, creativity and community! Designed and built with input from the local community , BECM is truly a community space. Exhibits are designed with a focus on reflecting the local culture and environment to promote learning and appreciation.

Once open, the museum will offer engaging and unique play experiences throughout 7,000 square feet of the historic Patron's Mercantile Co-Op Building.

BECM's exhibits are designed primarily for children ages birth to 10 but offer excitement for all ages! In addition, we offer a wide variety of engaging programs and events.

✨We are having so much fun during ART WEEK at Black Earth Children's Museum!

On Monday, visitors of all ages were inspired by live pottery demonstrations and enjoyed hands-on discovery at our clay hand-building station. Guests also had the opportunity to try the pottery wheels and receive one-on-one mini pottery lessons from professional potters with the Madison Potters Guild and Center Ground Studios.

On Tuesday, Nancy and our younger visitors created wonderful outdoor tape art on the front of the museum, transforming our space with creativity and imagination!

The fun continues tomorrow, June 19! Join us as Krystal visits the museum to share the joy, creativity, and connection she inspires through her music. We can't wait to see you there! 🎶

Art Week starts today!

We can't wait to see you for our 2nd Annual Art Week, June 15–19 from 10 AM–12 PM each day!

Thanks to the generous support of the Kohler Foundation, Inc., we'll have something new to discover every day. Join us for live demonstrations from local artists, hands-on art exploration, and plenty of opportunities to get creative. We also have sidewalk and window chalk available to make the museum even more colorful!

Run around the museum with us! Follow the chalk challenges, run through bubbles, get splashed with color powder, and more!

Our Color Run kicks off at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20th. Come early and grab a Black Earth Children's Museum T-shirt—just 3 for $20! It's the perfect shirt for an event where everyone crosses the finish line a little more colorful and a lot more expressive.

😎 Complimentary sunglasses will be available to help protect children's eyes during the run.

Art Week on the 19th - The Art of Music!

Engage with Krystal Lonsdale as she shares her joy for music with Black Earth Children's Museum! 🎵

Krystal is a musician, performer, educator, and teaching artist with nearly 20 years of experience inspiring young learners through music and the arts. A graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, she has performed professionally in New York City, the United Kingdom, and the Madison area.

Throughout her career, Krystal has taught music and creative arts in schools and community programs across Europe, New York City, and the Madison area, including as a Music Together instructor. She currently teaches at Children's Community School of Mount Horeb, where she combines her passion for music, storytelling, and education to create engaging experiences for children and families.

We can't wait for our young visitors and families to experience the joy, creativity, and connection she inspires through her work! ✨

Watch as he captures your likeness in a fun and creative way, highlighting the features that make you one of a kind. Whether it's your bright smile or expressive eyes Gary will turn up the "volume" on reality to create a keepsake that's sure to make you smile.

Caricature is more than just a funny drawing - it's an art form with a fascinating history. The great Leonardo da Vinci was sketching caricatures as early as the 1490s!

Art Week on the 16th - Creating with Tape!

⏰ 10 AM – 12 PM

Please join Nancy on Tuesday at the museum! She'll be making pictures using tape!

Nancy loves making art, and loves to see the happiness and excitement kids have when consumed by their own art-making.

Watercolor, oil, acrylic, collage, cut paper, and now tape! are some of her mediums.
Nancy's work can be found in private and corporate collections, on her website at nancycoxartwork.com, and in various places around the globe. You can also view her artwork in the museum's Emotions Exhibit!

We will have extra tape just in case you'd like to try it out on Tuesday! Explore your own creativity and discover what you'll create. We can't wait to see you!

Art Week Begins on the 15th – Join Us for a Day of Clay!

⏰ 10 AM to 12 PM

Experience the art of ceramics with Heidi from Center Ground Studios during this hands-on, educational event for all ages at the Black Earth Children’s Museum.

Explore clay in three exciting ways:

👐 Try the Pottery Wheel: a one-on-one, mini pottery lesson with professional potters from the Madison Potters Guild. Learn the basics of wheel throwing as you're guided through creating a pot from start to finish. Ages 7 and up

✨ Create at the Hand Building Station: a variety of self guided and age appropriate clay activity prompts to encourage creativity and hands-on discovery. All ages.

⚱️Watch Live Pottery Demonstrations: be inspired as talented local potters transform simple lumps of clay into beautiful works of art on the demonstration wheel. Learn about different forms, techniques, and the ceramic-making process in real time.

Please Note: This is an experience-based event focused on learning and exploration. Participants will not take home finished pottery.
