🪈🥁As we continue our celebration of America’s 250th birthday this year, we are thrilled to announce the return of the Brandywine Fife and Drums Corps to the Homestead for our Heritage Day Fall Festival. We cannot wait to have this ensemble of fifers, drummers, and historic flag bearers join us for our annual fall event. During the American Revolution, fifers and drummers were essential communicators, not entertainers. Each company had a fifer and drummer and when the regiment joined together, the 10 fifers and 10 drummers would form the “fife and drum corps” to march at the head of the column on parade. These musicians provided vital signals across the battlefield and within camp, using sound to regulate daily life and direct troops in the din of war. Fifers and drummers wore the opposite color of the enemy, in this case red coats trimmed with blue, so commanders could identify them as noncombatants during battle.

Originating in Topton, Pennsylvania, most of the Brandywine Colonials Fife and Drum Corps are alumni of the Brandywine Heights High School Fife and Drum Corps. A 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization, the group plays to remember, rekindle, and rejoice in our nation’s history, performing throughout Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Montgomery, and Bucks counties. They provided a wonderful demonstration during our 250th anniversary event over the summer and we look forward to having them join us on October 18th for Heritage Day.

🕯🐝It was a full house last Sunday in the Wayside Lodge where participants of all ages had a fabulous time at our first candle making workshop. Led by Heritage Art and Craft Studio, this three-in-one program on early American candle making offered guests insights into the history of candle making, its significance in colonial life, and interesting facts about bees. Participants hand-dipped a double-taper beeswax candle and created a five-inch cinnamon-scented cast beeswax ornament.

We are thrilled to partner with Peggy and Greg from Heritage Art and Craft Studio to bring this, as well as other workshops and classes, to the Daniel Boone Homestead. We have one more class coming up before the end of the year – Evergreen and Herbal Holiday Wreath Class on November 15th. The class is just about full, so send us an email to check on availability. We plan to offer both workshops again next year due to their popularity.

🪦🌳On this day in 1820, Daniel Boone passed away from natural causes at his son Nathan’s home near present-day Defiance, Missouri. He was 85. Daniel was buried in Missouri next to his wife Rebecca where he remained for many years in a modest grave. However, in 1845, Kentucky officials disinterred and removed both Daniel and Rebecca’s remains, relocating them to Frankfort, Kentucky, and created a significant monument marking the graves.

Daniel Boone’s exploration, and eventual settlement, of Kentucky is considered his greatest achievement and his continued opening of the American frontier earned him the title of America’s First Frontiersman. In 1775, he blazed the Wilderness Trail, founded Fort Boonesborough, and brought his wife and their seven children to the fort. Although Daniel is most known for his time spent discovering and settling Kentucky, his daring and adventurous spirit was born and nurtured in the Oley Valley of Pennsylvania. It was here that he learned how to track, hunt, and trap and spent countless hours exploring nature throughout his childhood. He would continue to rely on these skills throughout his entire adult life as he set out to explore the frontier.

🔥🔨Another fan favorite is returning to Heritage Day Fall Festival – blacksmithing! You do not want to miss Zimmerman Forge back in the shop. Blacksmithing is an integral part of the history and interpretation of the Homestead because Daniel Boone’s father, Squire, was an experienced blacksmith. During the colonial period, blacksmiths were considered artisans – skilled craftsmen who earned a living by pursuing one specific trade. These skilled tradesmen made the hardware and metal tools used most often in colonial America.

In addition, blacksmiths played a crucial role in the colonies’ success in the American Revolution, crafting a variety of essential items needed both on and off the battlefield. Not only did blacksmiths forge swords, muskets, and cannons, but they continued producing the ‘everyday’ items needed on the homefront – nails, hoes, axes, household and farm tools, iron hook and hinges, and of course horseshoes. They supplied various wagon parts contributing to vital transportation needs during the war as well as hardware needed for buildings, bridges, and overall infrastructure. Zimmerman Forge will be hard at work in the shop from 12-4 on October 18th and we hope to see you for this great event.

🇬🇧📜🇺🇸We are bringing the America250 celebration to our Heritage Day Fall Festival this year. Our mustering and Dragoons activities have been so popular this spring and summer, that we’re giving visitors yet another opportunity to enjoy these in the fall. The sound of the drum will call young visitors to take up arms and join the local army. The new “recruits” will join in a mustering activity as they are taken through authentic eighteenth-century military drills and marches.
Then, visit a member of the 4th Continental Light Dragoons and try practicing your swordsmanship skills while sitting in a soldier’s saddle. Not all troops during the Revolution fought on foot using muskets. Mounted soldiers, like the 4th Continental Light Dragoons, fought on horseback using swords. The Continental Army’s use of mounted troops was minimal compared to the British, due to a shortage of horses, saddlery, and money. Learn more about the different types of troops who fought during the American Revolution during Heritage Day on October 18th and keep celebrating America’s 250th birthday all year long.

🌲🧭🌳🗺️Did you know that the Daniel Boone Homestead is home to its very own orienteering course? You might be wondering, what exactly is orienteering? Well, orienteering is an outdoor navigation sport in which participants use a map and compass to find check points along a mapped course, often as quickly as possible. Maybe you’re familiar with the activity but have always wanted to learn how to do it. Well, now’s your chance! The Delaware Valley Orienteering Association (DVOA) will be hosting a beginner orienteering meet at the Homestead on October 3rd, starting at 10am at the Wayside Lodge. All ages and skills are welcome to attend. More details can be found on the DVOA website at www.dvoa.org. Registration is not required, however if you plan to bring a larger group, we ask that you please notify Homestead staff.

The DVOA is a non-profit organization founded in 1967 and is the oldest civilian orienteering club in the United States. The organization’s primary goals are to promote orienteering through educational programs and provide a variety of quality orienteering experiences for people in eastern Pennsylvania, Northern Delaware, Northern Maryland and central and Southern New Jersey. DVOA holds approximately 45 orienteering events a year at various local, state, national parks, and environmental centers in the area.

🎉🎣🏹Happy National Grandparents Day! Being a grandparent is certainly not the first thing people think of when they think of Daniel Boone, but with ten children, Boone was a grandfather to many. It is believed he and his wife had over 50 grandchildren. Several of Daniel and Rebecca’s children had 10 or more children of their own, with Nathan Boone having a whopping 14. Boone’s grandchildren helped carry on his family’s legacy, spreading across Kentucky, Missouri, and even further into the frontier. Many even continued their grandfather’s pioneering efforts. We think having Daniel Boone as a grandfather would have been pretty cool. Can you imagine learning how to hunt, trap, and fish from America’s first frontiersman himself?

🕯️📜🪶We may have some new demonstrations coming to Heritage Day this year, but fear not, favorite hands-on activities including candle dipping and quill pen writing will be returning. Visitors of all ages will delight in lining up and dipping candles in the hot wax as part of this important autumn task. Candle dipping was typically done during the fall following butchering season because candles were often made from tallow. Tallow was the hard waxy animal fat that peeled off the meat and was then cooked down to render it clean. Occasionally bayberry wax was also used. Candles also included some type of wicking - a material used in both candles and lamps to burn and draw up the wax or oil. The wicking could be made from h**p, tow (flax), or cotton. Dipping was the primary method colonists used to make candles, although candle molds could also be used. As the frontier became less remote, molds were more easily accessible and made the process of candle making much simpler. However, molds did not fully eliminate the dipping process because hand-dipped candles burned longer than molded ones.

In addition to candle dipping, don’t miss a visit to the ‘Schoolhouse” where visitors can try their hand at writing with a quill pen and experience what school was like in the eighteenth-century. As part of their education, children used a hornbook for their lessons. This paddle-shaped piece of wood had a paper pasted to it that included the alphabet and the Lord’s Prayer. Children referred to their hornbook to help them learn how to form their letters and how to eventually write sentences. We hope to see you on October 18th for our Heritage Day Fall Festival where visitors of all ages can participate in these fun, hands-on activities and learn about life in colonial America.
