SAN BERNARDINO: Memories of a gold miner

The names are long gone.
Names such as Clapboard Town, Poverty Point and Belleville. Those were the towns, some mere camps. The mining operations included the Jacoby, the Leydon and, almost necessarily, the Rattlesnake.
Today, Holcomb Valley — north of Big Bear Lake —- is known more for its campgrounds. It’s hard to imagine the quiet and remote mountain area being home to 10,000 miners. But that’s what the discovery of gold by William “Billy” Holcomb did in 1860.
One of those miners was Sydney P. Waite.

Sydney P. Waite was, among other things, a temporary gold miner during the Holcomb Valley rush in the 1860s

Was there any railroads built around Big Bear Lake or Baldwin Lake? I recall when I went up to Big Bear with my folks ages ago, and I might’ve seen a picture of what looked like a Porter saddle-tank located around the area, along with a old mine accessed by a dirt road with a concrete embankment, which in another photograph I saw a railroad track where the dirt road is now. Might anyone here know about what I mentioned?
