This month we are doing a tribute to mill girls from the 40s! In honor of D-Day on June 6th we are telling the stories of our wartime mill girls. This is Louise Corriveau, who worked in the supply room of the sheet factory at the Lewiston facility. She told the story of how new employee insurance gave her the money to have a medical procedure in the May 1941 issue of the worker magazine, the Pepperell Sheet. Happy Flag Day from the Biddeford Mills Museum! The Pepperell Mills often referenced the U.S’s most patriotic textile, the American flag in their monthly magazine for Pepperell workers, the Pepperell Sheet. During the WWII era Pepperell talked about how “trade follows the flag” and how they wanted to increase international trade. Your Friday Flyer has arrived! This week we’re highlighting an informational blurb from the Pepperell Sheet, a magazine put out for Pepperell Mill workers. In this PSA they highlighted safety signs and their importance, heading the page with “If you believe in yourself Believe in the signs”. Safety has always been an important question in the textile industry’s history, and this article tells an interesting story about some of the Pepperell’s protocols. This month we are doing a tribute to mill girls from the 40s! In honor of D-Day on June 6th we are telling the stories of our wartime mill girls. Marie Berube worked in the Biddeford Pepperell Mills in the 1940s. She was the facility's very first “napper tender”, a worker who operated the napping machine, which pulled loose fibers from cloth creating a soft fuzzy texture, called “nap”. In honor of D-Day the Biddeford Mills Museum is bringing back Pepperell’s participation in WWII. Did you know that Pepperell Fabrics were used in the war effort? Some of the cloth made by the Pepperell was given “one of the first government priorities in textile manufacturing…” reads “This Week at Pepperell”, a newspaper column from the Biddeford Daily Journal.
