The lilac has been one of the most popular and best loved flowers throughout history. It is primarily known for its deliciously perfumed fragrance, though some have little or no scent.

The common lilac, Syringa vulgaris, is native to Southern Europe. During colonial times it was not uncommon to find a lilac near the privy, as it does in the southwest yard at Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden.

Through out the grounds of Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden there is a collection of lilacs carefully selected by Eliza & Caroline Ferriday - they typically begin blooming around Mother’s Day and can last till early June.

At Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden we pause to give thanks for all amazing things our Mom’s do and realize that we don’t thank them nearly enough🥰

Caroline Ferriday’s mother, Eliza Mitchell Ferriday, was a force. She raised Caroline with love and instilled her with a sense of empathy. Not forgetting giving her the strength to fight for those who cannot.

Eliza Ferriday taught Caroline the beauty of the natural world with a life long love of gardening.

So today we celebrate all the mom’s who are forces in so many lives.

Happy Mother’s Day

Yesterday marked the 81st anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) which occurred less than 10 days after the liberation of Ravensbruck on April 30, 1945, when thousands of women imprisoned in the N**i concentration camp were finally freed.

In the days and weeks that followed, many survivors returned home to emotional welcomes. In several communities across Europe, returning prisoners and victims were greeted with bouquets of blooming lilacs - a symbol of spring, renewal, and hope after years of darkness and war. The fragrance and beauty of lilacs became forever tied to memories of liberation and reunion.

Yesterday’s anniversary of VE Day reminds us not only of the end of the war in Europe, but also of the resilience of survivors, the joy of homecoming, and the importance of remembering these stories for future generations.

We will never forget.

Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary with journey back to the Revolutionary era! ✨

Join us at Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden for a lively historic house tour led by Jonathan Bellamy - son of Rev. Bellamy, Revolutionary War solider, Yale graduate, and best friend of Aaron Burr (yep, that Aaron Burr).

From tales of the revolution and friendship to stories of life in colonial Connecticut, Jonathan brings excitement, humor, and spirit of America’s founding generation to life.

As we commemorate America’s Semiquincentennial, there’s no better place to experience history then where it happened.

📍Come curious. Leave inspired.

April 30, 1945 — Liberation Day at Ravensbruck concentration camp.

Today we remember the thousands of women imprisoned there - and honor the courage of the “Rabbits,” a group of young Polish prisoners subjected to brutal medical experiments. Despite unimaginable suffering, they resisted, supported one another, and bore witness.

Their strength became a powerful symbol of resilience and humanity in the face of cruelty. As we mark this day, we carry forward their stories, ensuring they are never forgotten.
