Imagine a place where you’d like to spend some time. Who, or what, would live there?

Inspired by “This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary”, artist Rosa E. Camacho Ramos invites artists of all ages to think about land, place, and the natural world as they create their own mini wildlife diorama light box.

Using simple materials, participants will layer paper, shapes, and light to build a small habitat inspired by an animal, landscape, or place that matters to them.

Come explore the exhibition, get creative, and build a little world of your own!

This workshop is free of charge. No experience necessary; all ages and abilities are welcome. Space is limited; please register in advance at LUAG.org/events. Can’t wait to see you!

From Archive to Art: A Journey through Libraries and Museums

What can archives, libraries, and museums teach us about the past? How might they help us imagine the future?

Lehigh Libraries Special Collections and Lehigh University Art Galleries take you on a journey across campus exploring how libraries and museums preserve history, make knowledge accessible, and provide space for new ideas and creative responses.

The tour begins in Linderman Library’s Bayer Galleria with “Unfinished Chapter: The First 250 Years of American Liberty”, exploring how historical documents and archival materials help us understand the stories that have shaped the United States. From there, we’ll visit LUAG’s “This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary”, where artists respond to history, place, identity, and ideas about America through visual and creative forms.

Along the way, we’ll consider how archives become more than records of the past: they can be starting points for storytelling, questioning, making, and imagining what comes next.

Open to Lehigh First-Year students ONLY.

LUAG’s thought-provoking exhibition, “This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary” resists strict definitions of “America” and “Americans” – inviting viewers to explore multiple possibilities of being, living, and understanding.

Weaving together maps, metaphor, music, and more, “This Land” draws from the LUAG collection and beyond, including historic images and artifacts from the C. F. Martin & Co. Archives.

Staceyann Chin in conversation with Professor Simone J. Alexander

What does it mean to create a place where we belong? And how can art, storytelling, and collective action help us imagine and build those places?

Join multidisciplinary artist, poet, and activist Staceyann Chin in conversation with Professor Simone J. Alexander about land, home, identity, and belonging. Drawing from her decades-long artistic practice and her work as a land steward and founder of MendDiCap, Chin will explore how personal stories can become sites of connection, resistance, and world-building.

Her work asks us to consider who gets to feel at home, whose stories shape our understanding of place, and how we might create more expansive spaces of belonging.

Presented in partnership with Africana Studies and the Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG) as part of LUAG’s Art in Dialogue series and in conjunction with the exhibition This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary. Attendees are encouraged to view the exhibition prior to the event at 4 pm.

•What to expect
Performances will last approximately 45 minutes. Both floor cushions and chairs will be available. Performances will be audible throughout the galleries; you are welcome to explore the galleries while you listen, coming and going as you please!

•What is the LUAG Listening Room Series?
Experience the voice of local musicians, poets, and student performers this fall in conjunction with LUAG’s “This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary” exhibition.

•What is the LUAG Listening Room?
Set in its own 394-square-foot space inside the Main Gallery, the LUAG Listening Room provides a multisensory learning environment within the “This Land” exhibition. The space includes a listening station with vintage vinyl and a record player, a digital playlist that invites community input, interactive screens, creative lyric-writing and art-making stations, and an instrument corner featuring real loaner guitars from C. F. Martin Guitar & Co. – welcoming visitors of all ages and abilities to participate.

Gentle movement, mindful breathing, soothing sounds, and moments of quiet reflection to settle the mind and make space for well-being. Whether you are new to yoga or have an established practice, modifications and options will be offered to support different bodies, abilities, and comfort levels. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mat; a few loaner mats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
