Today we celebrate 90 years of the iconic Hog Farmer / Merry Prankster / beat poet / activist / comic / clown, Wavy Gravy, who was born Hugh Romney.
Michael Lang’s book, The Road to Woodstock, introduced him this way: “An unforgettable character, Hugh was missing most of his teeth and was wearing a straw cowboy hat with a big feather in it. He struck me as some sort of cosmic clown / word slinger. Today, everyone knows him as Wavy Gravy—B.B. King gave him that name at a Texas festival a short time after Woodstock.”
is marking his milestone with a birthday bash at The Masonic in San Francisco to benefit SEVA FOUNDATION, with performances by Steve Earle, Todd Rundgren, Rickie Lee Jones, CAT POWER, The Moldy Peaches and more.

Today, we remember Richie Havens.

“When I walked out on the stage, I was looking at the culmination of something... it was a whole world of people who just shared the same ideas, the same feelings, you know, and ended up in the same place with everybody else. So it was really fantastic to look out there and say, well guys, you know what, this is what we were looking for. This is the freedom we were looking for.
