We are proud to announce that the Stuart Tank Memorial Museum is once again a “Blue Star Museum” in 2026!

The 2026 program begins on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 16, 2026, and ends on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026. You can learn more about the program and find a comprehensive list of participating museums at arts.gov/BlueStarMuseums.

Blue Star Museums is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, in collaboration with the Department of Defense and participating museums across America.

“Museums help military families stay connected—to each other, to their communities, and to the nation they serve,” said Mary Anne Carter, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “As our country approaches 250 years of independence, Blue Star Museums provide service members and their loved ones with meaningful opportunities to explore history and spark curiosity. For military families—who often face frequent moves and time apart—these shared museum experiences offer a sense of stability, belonging, and connection. By opening doors nationwide, this program ensures they can engage with the arts and history that reflect their sacrifices and strengthen the bonds that hold them together.”

“Blue Star Museums has opened doors for military families to explore, connect, and feel at home,” said Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we’re proud to continue this partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and museums nationwide—welcoming military families into the heart of our nation’s story and celebrating them every step of the way.”

The Stuart Tank Memorial Museum displays an eclectic collection of documents and artifacts from the American Car & Foundry war effort and local World War II Veterans. The collection is headlined by a 1942 M3 Stuart Light Tank on loan from the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The Stuart Tank Memorial Museum honors the 9,135 workers from throughout northeastern Pennsylvania who produced 15,224 Stuart Light Tanks for the US Military and Allies during WWII.

The Museum is open on Tuesdays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Fridays from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Large group and private tours are also available by appointment.

For more information on our Museum and upcoming events including Berwick World War II Weekend 2026, please visit berwickstuarttank.org.

In addition to The Stuart Tank Memorial Museum, participating museums can be found in all 50 states, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and include history, art, and children’s museums; historical sites; botanical gardens; zoos; aquariums; and more. A map of all participating museums is available on arts.gov. Museums can join the Blue Star Museums program all summer long and the map will be updated regularly.

This free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States military—Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps—and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), DD Form 1173-1 ID card or the Next Generation Uniformed Services (Real) ID card for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum.

About the National Endowment for the Arts: Established by Congress, the National Endowment for the Arts is an independent federal agency that is the largest funder of the arts and arts education in communities nationwide and a catalyst of public and private support for the arts. By advancing opportunities for arts participation and practice, the NEA fosters and sustains an environment in which the arts benefit everyone in the United States. To learn more, visit arts.gov

Berwick World War II Weekend 2026 Event Theme Announcement:

"Road to Rome, 1944"

Since the landings in Salerno in 1943, the allied advance up the boot of Italy – the so called “Soft underbelly of Europe” - had been anything but easy. By the opening days of 1944, the allies were close to the Italian capital of Rome but were severely bogged down in the Liri Mountains along the German Gustav and Hi**er lines, and tentatively holding a beachhead in the coastal city of Anzio, where Operation Shingle had hoped to leapfrog the German mountain defensive line. Instead leading to further complications in the Italian campaign. However, the spring of 1944 saw a boon for the Allies.

In May 1944, the allies launched Operation Diadem, a broad front attack on the German defensive lines in an attempt to finally break out of the “Winter line” and link the Anzio beachhead to the main allied advance. The allies would smash through the German defenses. Veteran military forces form all over the world would take part in the Battle, many veterans American Divisions that have been in combat since 1942, the full might of the British Commonwealth including Australia, South Africa, India, and Canada, the French Expeditionary Corps with Metropolitan and Colonial French soldiers from all over the world, and the Polish Expeditionary Corps getting its payback for 1939. Together this multi-national force advanced out of the mountains and to the Anzio beachhead linking up with American forces and continuing to the prize, Rome. Although German forces fought delaying actions, they quickly retreated and abandoned Rome, declaring it an open city. In a controversial military move, the allies – now on a steamrolling advance towards the city – decided instead of bypassing Rome and trapping the retreating German forces to the north, decided to enter the city, allowing the Germans to retreat to their next defensive line.

The allies would declare Rome the first axis capital to fall to the allies, liberated on June 4, 1944. The advance was strikingly fast with Op. Diadem launching on May 11th and ending with liberation 24 days later. Unfortunately for the soldiers and sailors fighting in the Italian front, their accomplishment would be overshadowed by the landings in Normandy the following day.

The long-awaited entrance of allied forces to the shores of France put the symbolic and significant achievement of the Rome liberation as a quick flash in the pan. With the Italians officially surrendering in 1943, many viewed the liberation of Rome as nothing more than a symbolic victory with the primary focus being on Germany and the true prize of Berlin. The Mediterranean theater, which was the primary focus of the Western allies since mid-1943, was now a secondary front. Slowly, veteran divisions and troops were withdrawn from Italy for Operation Dragoon in August of 1944, including the entire French Corps significantly sapping the strength of the allied armies in Italy.

The overshadowing of the Italian campaign and liberation of Rome not only have historical significance but also continue to resonate to this day with many thinking that American involvement in WWII began in the Normandy campaign. This is a tragic disservice to the many men and women who saw service not only in the Italian campaign but also the Sicilian and North African campaigns. Many wish to forget the Italian campaign for the massive casualties, horrific fighting conditions, and two nearly disastrous amphibious landings. However, without the lessons learned in Italy, the allies would not have had the vital knowledge necessary to land at Normandy and subsequently break out of the beachhead.

A British soldier ballad written shortly after the liberation of Rome and the Normandy landings sums up the sentiment of soldiers fighting on the Italian front in the summer of 1944:

‘If you look round the mountains

In the mud and rain

You will find the scattered crosses

Some which bear no name

Heartbreak and toil and suffering gone

The lads beneath them slumber on

For they were the D-Day Dodgers

Who'll stay in Italy'
