Monarch butterflies have about 3-5 generations each year, with each generation playing a specific role in migration. The 1st generation emerges in early spring and leaves its overwintering grounds to find suitable places to lay eggs. The 2nd and 3rd generations live during spring and summer, focus on reproduction, and remain local. Their lifespans range between 2-6 weeks.
Last generation monarchs, often called the fall migratory generation, hatch in late summer. This generation delays maturity and does not reproduce immediately, allowing it to conserve energy for the long migration back to its overwintering home. They are the longest-living generation, with a lifespan of about 8-9 months instead of only a few weeks.
Monarch butterflies are the only butterflies known to make a two-way migration, similar to that of birds. Each fall, they travel to warmer overwintering habitats because they cannot survive long periods of cold winter weather, and milkweed plants are scarce. Changes in daylight and temperature serve as environmental cues that trigger this journey.
Monarch butterflies do not learn migration routes from older butterflies. Instead, they are born with an instinct that guides them to the same overwintering areas used by previous generations, migrating between 1,000–3,000 miles. Although research continues, evidence suggests that monarchs may navigate using the sun's position and their internal clock to fly in the right direction while also using their antennae to sense the Earth’s magnetic field.
Every year, the monarch butterflies’ journey becomes more difficult. The loss of milkweed, pesticide use, habitat destruction, climate change, and severe weather threaten their survival. Fortunately, you can help improve their survival rates by planting milkweed and native flowers, protecting important habitats, and supporting conservation efforts that give monarchs a better chance to complete their remarkable journey.
