As the Berlin High School football season starts we want to share this poster found in the Berlin Area Historical Society museum on South Adams Ave. BHS has been playing football since 1895. The team started playing on the Berlin fair grounds. The first game played on the BHS campus was in 1926 on what was known as the upper campus at the 1918 high school building. (Now known as Historic Berlin School Apartments.) A new field was constructed on the lower campus in 1938. (The current location of the high school baseball field.) Games have been played east of Clay Lamberton school and next to the current Middle and high school since 1967.

Want to help your favorite Wisconsin tavern make history? 🍻

The future Wisconsin History Center wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to Wisconsin’s famed tavern culture and the local establishments that have served as vibrant community hubs across the state for generations.

But we need your help to ensure every corner of Wisconsin is represented in the exhibition display. Between now and August 31, 2026, we are crowdsourcing tavern tokens from local watering holes across the state. These storied tokens date back to 17th century in Britain where small wooden discs, often called tokens or chips, could be exchanged for beverages at pubs. The tradition traveled over to Colonial America and persists to this day in local bars and taverns across Wisconsin.

The Berlin Area Historical Society Museum, 111 S. Adams Ave., will be open Sunday, June 14 from 1-4. Admission is no charge although donations are welcome.

Highway 49 going north into Berlin circa 1912. Notice the wagon tracks. Horses going up the hill south towards Green Lake had to really work hard to get to the top.

Spring in Berlin oftentimes means flooding. These mid 1930's photos show flooding on "The Marsh Road" (Highway 49) going south out of Berlin.
